Student of the department of physics once again held national student paper competition (LKTI). Chairman of the Physics Students Association (HIMAFI) Asnur Azis, a physics student attended Hasanuddin university in 2013, explained that this event is a part of the 2016 Physics Competetion held in March in the form of physics olympiad where the contestants are students of Junior and Senior high school. This is in contrast with LKTI where the contestants are university physics students and related fields. There are several stages of the competition, first is the submission of partcipants’ papers to the committee, which was held since March this year. Each submitted scientific work is written by a team with average three members. The work can be an idea, innovation and design of equipment or research in the form of theoretical or experimental work. All submissions were later selected by the Jury composed of professors who then decided ten best papers to be presented in final stage. The method of writing scientific papers and the rules of the competition were published by the committee online through the website of HIMAFI: http://www.himafi-fmipa-unhas.org/
Presentation of the finalists took place on Saturday, April 30, 2016 in Science Building, Faculty of Science, which was officially opened by the Vice Dean Student Affairs, Dr. Andi Ilham Latunra, representing the Dean of the Science Faculty Dr. Amiruddin. The finalists present their work in front of the jury board. All partcipants and audiences from physics students of Hasanuddin university attended the presentation. The jury consists of three lecturers from the Department of Physics, i.e., Prof. Dahlang Tahir, Paul Lobo Gareso, Ph. D., and Tasrief Surungan, Ph.D .; and two lecturers from the Department of Chemistry, Dr. Indah Raya and Dr. Muhammad Zakir.
The ten finalists are from the major national universities, i.e., from Padjadjaran University Bandung, Sriwijaya University Palembang, Airlangga University Surabaya and the University of Education Bandung, and IPB Bogor, each was represented by one team. While the University of Hasanuddin and ITS Surabaya passed two teams. Chairman of the Department of Physics, Dr. Tasrief Surungan, in his speech at opening ceremony mentioned as quoted that this event is very important; analogous to a national football league. Only with a good league can we have a good and qualified footbal team which can represent our country in World Cup. Similarly, through a regular scientific competition with good quality, students can forge themselves and thus potentially become professional scientists. It is an irony, Indonesia is a great nation in term of number of population, which is the four largest in the world, but contribute very less to the development of global science and technology. We should be able to contribute to the global science and technology, comparable to China, India, and the United States, he said.
After the presentation, which lasted until late afternoon, the jury set a team from the University of Airlangga as the winner of the competition, who presented the work entitled “Ethanol-Based Ethanol for Industrial Winko in Pekalongan “. Then the next winner are followed by the team from IPB Bogor, UPI Bandung, UNSRI and Padjadjaran University.
Congratulations to the winners and the other finalists. All ten papers will later be published in the form of proceeding of LKTI 2016, after revisions in accordance suggestions of the jury and each corresponding supervisor.
The results of the Mathematics and Natural Science Olympiad abbreviated as ON-MIPA (in Indonesian Language) held on April 5th to 6 2016 for the Region IX covering all provinces in Sulawesi has been announced recently. Muhammad Nur
Gazali Yunus, the student of Physics Department has been selected as the first winner for Physics. He achieved the highest score in the competition.
Mr. Yunus will then represent Hasanuddin University (Unhas) in the national
level competition which will be held in May, 23rd – 26th, 2016 in Jakarta.
ON-MIPA which has become an annual event of the Directorate General for Education and Student Affairs (BELMAWA), Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemeristekdikti) and been a prestigious event for enthusiasts of Science, because it contends all fields of Science, i.e., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The total prize of this competition is up to hundreds of millions of rupiah.
Stages of the race also stratified, the selection level of the university, which was followed by a number of students from various faculties in a university,
the followed by regional level and national level. For this year, participants at the ON-MIPA of Hasanuddin university are students from the Faculty of Science, Pharmacy, Engineering, Medical faculty, Dentistry, Public Health, Agriculture, Marine Science and Fisheries, and Forestry. From this level it was selected 7 best students,
namely those who obtain the highest score for each corresponding
field. At the next stage, the 7 selected students represented Unhas to
next level, which was the regional level. It was held in the early April on the campus of UKI Paulus Makassar, and directly witnessed by the officer from Kemenristekdikti.
Muhammad Gazali, who is a student of the department of Physics, entry year 2013, familiarly called Gazali, has been recorded as a brilliant student.
This first class student, graduated from Senior High School 1 Belopa Luwu, has now completed approximately 120 credits with a GPA of 3.9.
If nothing goes wrong, Gazali will be able to complete his bachelor program on time, even with possibility less than four years. Interviewed after attending lecture on Internet Programming, Gazali answered questions about his main interest
in physics specialitation. He is very eager in pursuing the field of theoretical physics for graduate program. His main reason, in addition to extremely challenging field, it is also the field which was less favorable among
the young generation. He aspires to one day be able to study in developed country with very strong physics. In a preparing for the National
physics Olimpiad, Gazali is now attending intensive guidance specially held for him in Theoretical and Computational Physics Laboratory. One of the lectures is Bansawang BJ, M.Sc., who is also the coordinator of ON-MIPA in University level.
Appreciation and congratulation to Gazali, we wish you successful in National Physics Olimpiad, that you may win the competition and can bring the medal to our beloved university. (Adm01).
