Student service emerged from the student consciousness as an undergraduate to be able to take advantage of their time not only in class but also to share their knowledge that they have gained from the university to community to implement development in community.

Experience shows that the students’ role in various activities has provided evidence and enrich the meaning of students as well-educated workforce in the various aspects of development activities. In 1971, three universities, i.e: Gajah Mada University (UGM), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) and Andalas University (UNAND), were the pioneer of student service project used to be called “Student Community Service”. On February 1971, at Gajah Mada University anniversary, President of Republic of Indonesia stated: “...... that every student should stay in a village. Learn to live and to help the villagers. To solve the development problems as in the curriculum.”

Hasanuddin University as one of the pioneer of executing STUDENT SERVICE started in the academic year 1973/1974 to 2007/2008 has implemented Regular STUDENT SERVICE in 2003, STUDENT SERVICE Centre started the internship program for health/ law/ letters/ agriculture/ animal science/ agro complex/ economics/ forestry/ mathematics and natural science, meanwhile, the internship cooperation program held between Hasanuddin University in cooperation with Forum Rektor Indonesia to monitor general election. In 2003, the internship cooperation program held between Hasanuddin University and Ministry of the Welfare of the People (Kemkesra) to monitor PKPS BBM (government compensation program for fuel).
