Prototype Greenhouse Development of Superior Rice Varieties Cooperation of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Hasanuddin University, Taiwan Inaugurated

Hasanuddin University's Faculty of Agriculture has completed the construction of the Prototype Greenhouse in cooperation with the Taipe Economic and Trade Office (TETO) and Taiwan's International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF). The prototype was inaugurated by the Chief Representative of Teto (Jhon C. Chen) and the Rector of Hasanuddin University (Prof. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, MA). The launching event which was marked by cutting the ribbon took place at the Teaching Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Tuesday (11/26).

In his remarks, the Rector of Hasanuddin University stated that the existence of the prototype greenhouse added to the enthusiasm and inspiration of the research teams at Hasanuddin University. He also explained the designation of the greenhouse as a center for the development of superior rice varieties.

"The prototype greenhouse of the Faculty of Agriculture, measuring 30 x 8 meters, has the advantage of being able to note the surrounding climate elements automatically. The greenhouse is intended as a center for the development of superior rice varieties in South Sulawesi, which will be implemented in the seven largest rice producing districts in South Sulawesi, "explained Prof. Dwia.

ICDF Secretary General, Hsiang Tie Yie explained that for the past 43 years ICDF has collaborated with Indonesia in various sectors including agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, animal husbandry, aquaculture and so on. ICDF and TETO have implemented this program in South Sulawesi Province through Hasanuddin University since last year.

"This is still a prototype, so it looks small. The original size of the greenhouse is able to produce seeds of 5 tons / hectare with a total harvest of 7-8 tons. Its function is to test existing varieties, tolerant of prone conditions and productive tillers, "said Hsiang Tien Yie.

The chief representative of TETO, Jhon C. Chen said he was satisfied to have a prototype greenhouse and seeds that had been developed in it.

"We are satisfied with the prototype that has been built by Unhas and this will be used for experiments. We hope that with this greenhouse, we can analyze the use of fertilizers and suitable weather for nurseries and others, "Chen explained.

In closing, Chen hopes it can continue this collaboration in order to develop a greenhouse with a more sophisticated size and technology so that it can produce useful experiments going forward.

On that occasion, Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo who had just finished giving a public lecture at the Faculty of Agriculture Unhas took the time to visit and see the Prototype Greenhouse. The visit of the Minister of Agriculture was accompanied by South Sulawesi Deputy Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman. (*)
