Background |
Welcome
to the website of the Task Force on Education for the Twenty-first Century. The aim of
this website is to further debate and reflection on the ideas expressed in Learning:
the Treasure Within, the report to UNESCO of the International Commission on Education
for the Twenty-first Century. Simply speaking, the Commission felt that education
throughout life is based upon four pillars: learning to know, learning to do,
learning to live together and learning to be. Education takes place throughout life in many forms, none of which ought to be exclusive. We must start to think about education in a more all-encompassing fashion. Likewise the four pillars cannot stand alone. Without all the four pillars education would not be the same. Since the report was published in 1996 a small UNESCO task force has been working on follow-up activities to the report, publishing background studies and holding seminars on issues related to the report. Some of the results and future activities are presented in our list of follow up activities. We hope that you will be interested in finding out more about the work of the Commission. On this website you can download the Highlights of the report and the introduction by the president of the Commission, Jacques Delors. The background and history of the Commission is also presented here for those who are interested in the process leading up to the report. Feel free to contact the Task Force Secretariat with any questions you may have regarding the report or the follow-up work now being carried out. Alexandra
