TM 262 Hertzian Contact Apparatus Show data sheet (pdf file)
Technical Description
The objective of the unit is to demonstrate the characteristics of the contact area produced with Hertzian contact. A pressure pad made of silicone rubber can be pressed against a transparent plastic plate in a defined manner using a lever. Due to the double contour on the plate and the single contour on the pressure pad, both cross-shaped and elliptical contact areas can be produced. The contact force can be measured with the aid of a spring balance. A halogen lamp illuminates the experiment from the side, this makes the contact area easy to see. The table unit is of metal construction.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
· Characteristics of the contact area on point contact with varying contour radii
· Characteristics of the contact area as a function of the contact force
· Influence of an additional transverse component in the contact force
Features
Contact area particularly easy to see due to use of transparent plastic with silicone rubber
