HM 160.31 Broad Crested Weir Show data sheet (pdf file)
Technical Description
The broad crested weir is one of the fixed weirs. Normally the water flows over the weir without the down-stream level being below the weir crest. If this is the case, such a weir is termed an underwater weir. The experimental set-up is placed on the base of the flume and is fixed in place with a bolt. The weir body is made of plastic. By turning the weir body, it is possible to choose between a sharp edged and a rounded overflow edge. Tubular seals inserted in slots on the weir body complete the experimental set-up. In practice, broad crested weirs are used as so-called submerged dikes.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
In conjunction with the HM 160, the following experiments are possible:
· Flow rate measurements on a broad crested weir
· Comparison of perfect and imperfect overshoot
· Burble and cavitation
· Boundary state between flow and supercritical flow on a broad crested weir

For the exact measurement of water levels, the HM 160.52 Level Gauge is recommended.
Features
· Flow behaviour on an underwater weir
