Technical Description
Water turbines are used in hydroelectric power plants that convert the potential energy of the water into mechanical energy, mostly to drive electrical generators. Turbines are classified by their principle of operation into impulse and reaction turbines. In the case of impulse turbines like the Pelton turbine, the static pressures at the wheel inlet and outlet are the same magnitude, while the Francis turbine is a reaction turbine on which the static pressure is larger at the inlet than at the outlet. The conversion of energy takes place on the Pelton turbine at the control device, however on the Francis turbine it is distributed across the control device and the wheel. This distribution is termed the reaction coefficient.
