This experimental unit has been developed in conjunction with the Institute of Thermal Process Engineering at the Martin-Luther University, Halle-Wittenberg. A saturated solution is added to the storage tank and a pump delivers most of this solution into the main circuit. This circulating solution is heated above saturation temperature using a heat exchanger and a heating water circuit to prevent premature crystallisation. A valve is used to feed a small amount of the solution through the crystallisation cell. This part of the solution is cooled below saturation temperature to induce crystallisation. The crystallisation cell is a tube with screens at both the inlet and outlet. The cell can be opened to allow the addition of crystals as crystallisation nuclei. The mesh size of the screens is selected to prevent the crystals from escaping from the cell. The flow conditions create a fluidised bed in the cell, in which crystal growth occurs. The level of growth can be determined by weighing the crystals before and after the experiment. Potassium sulphate is recommended as the experimental material of choice. A screening machine and a microscope can be used for evaluation. |
