HM 162.32 Free Overflow Spillway Section Show data sheet (pdf file) Print page
Technical Description
HM 162.32 contains the base for a spillway. This is fitted to the base of the channel in conjunction with the HM 162.54 Base Plate and HM 162.37 (4 different dissipation structures). The base has a ramp section with a cut-out at the end of the ramp. There a dissipation structure is used. In this way different experimental set-ups can be assembled. Tubular seals made of plastic inserted in slots on the side of the weir body complete the experimental set-up. In practice, dissipation structures are used to remove energy from the flow after a weir.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
In conjunction with HM 162.37 and HM 162.54
· Generation of different forms of flow by damming the downstream water
· Measurement of the flow velocity for super-critical flow (HM 162.50)
· Measurement of upstream and downstream water levels using different forms of dissipation structure (flow kept constant)
· Investigation of different dissipation structures in respect of their effect on the flow

For exact measurement of water levels, the use of the HM 162.52 Hook and Point Gauge on the moving HM 162.59 Instrument Carriage is recommended.
