HM 161.36 Siphon Spillway Show data sheet (pdf file) Print page
Technical Description
The siphon weir is a type of solid overflow weir. The drain area of the weir is shaped like a closed canal. As soon as the water flows over the highest point, an
overhang permits the automatic start up of siphon action. In contrast to a nor-mal overflow weir, the flow takes place within a pipe rather than free flow. Utilising the intake effect makes it possible to have greater flow rates than with an overflow weir. A ventilation valve is used to regulated the flow rate. The Plexiglas arrangement is laid out on the bottom of the canal and attached with screws.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
The following examinations are possible in conjunction with HM 161 flow channel:
· Function of a siphon weir
· Flow rate and drain coefficients of a siphon weir
· Pipe flows
· Comparison of overflow and siphon weirs
· Cavitation process to overflow and siphon weirs
