Technical Description
This experimental unit has been developed in conjunction with the Institute for Thermal Process Engineering at the TU Hamburg-Harburg. A Sodium chloride (NaCl) solution is delivered from a tank to the membrane module using a pump. The pump generates the necessary osmotic pressure for separation. The semi-permeable membrane is permeable for water but not for the dissolved NaCl. This causes the solution to separate out into retentate (concentrated solution) and permeate (water). The retentate and permeate are fed back to the solution tank but can also be collected separately. In order to check the success of the separation, salt concentrations in the feed, retentate and permeate are recorded by measuring the respective conductivity values. A further tank containing distilled water is available for flushing the system at low pressures and high flow rates. To prevent the pump from running dry, both tanks are fitted with low water protection.

Learning Objectives / Experiments

- Determination of the membrane constants and the retention capacity

at different feed concentrations and pressures
