AT 300 Theory of Electric Motors Show data sheet (pdf file) Print page
Technical Description
An important system component in most areas of engineering is formed by electrical drive units. They are available in such variety and such numbers that it is scarcely possible to avoid the need for knowledge of the basic principles of small electrical drives. AT 300 enables to become familiar with various types of small electric motors, and to investigate their electrical and mechanical behaviour under load. Four different motors are provided. They are loaded via an adjustable belt brake. The braking force is directly indicated by a mechanical force transducer (spring balance). An optical sensor measures the speed. The relationship between current and loading torque is shown by an ammeter. The exchange of the experimental motors is uncomplicated and can be done by hand. Due to the simple assembly, tools are not required. Electric connections of motor and switch board are realized with laboratory cables. The unit is excellently suited to student experiments.
Learning Objectives / Experiments
- Determine the speed-torque characteristic curve of
electric drive motors of less than 1kW
  + Three-phase motor, for single-phase operation
     with Steinmetz wiring
+ single-phase motor with starting capacitor
  + split-pole motor
  + universal motor
- Measurement of motor power
- Determining motor efficiency
- Current consumption of the investigated motor
  depending of the loading torque
