Hasanuddin University through the Faculty of Medicine (FK) held a public lecture by presenting two speakers who each discussed different topics. The speakers had conducted joint research with foreign lecturers before. This activity took place in the FK Senate Room, Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Friday (11/15).
The activity was opened by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. dr. Irfan Idris, M. Kes. In his remarks, he appreciated the achievements of the two FK lecturers who innovated, enriched,and updated their knowledge.
dr. Yenni Yusuf, Ph.D who is a lecturer in the Department of Pathology FK Unhas and a member of the Vaccine and Immune laboratory team at Kanazawa University, Japan delivered the topic of "Development of Malaria Vaccines for Protection and Transmission Blockade".
Research on malaria and the development of this vaccine aims to produce a vaccine that has effective protection against plasmodium in mosquito bites. This research was conducted by two methods which are Protective Efficacy Study and Transmission Blocking Assay which produced two antigens.
"Cases of deaths caused by malaria are quite large. from approximately 217 million cases, there are at least 435 thousand deaths caused by this disease," explained Dr. Yenni.
On the same occasion, dr. Rusdina Bte Ladju, Ph.D as the second speaker who is also a lecturer in the Department of Anatomical Pathology and a member of the Liver Foundation laboratory research team at the University of Trieste, Italy, explained the topic about "The Importance of Death Receptor Pathway In Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Its Potential in the Development of Oligonucleotodi Nanomedicine".
On this occasion, Dr. Rusdiana explained that 99% of liver cancer cases are caused by Hepatocellular Carcinoma or HCC, which is a type of liver disease that occurs due to complications of liver disease, such as cirrhosis and inflammation of the liver.
"More than 15 million new cases are caused by several type of cancer. The spread is from Asia to Africa. It is predicted that an increase of liver cancer cases will rise in Europe and America by 2040, on of which is caused by lifestyle,” explained dr. Rusdiana.
Participants enthusiastically listened and gave questions to the speakers. This activity was attended Para peserta at least 20 participants from students and lecturers.(*)
