Universitas Hasanuddin Build Mechanical Ventilator to Support the Needs of Patients

Research Team of Universitas Hasanuddin made breathing apparatus called Venus (Ventilator Unhas). This breathing apparatus (ventilator) was made to support the Covid-19 Task Force Team of Unhas in providing health services to patients.

Through an interview on Saturday (5/16), the Head of Sub Directorate of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Asmi Citra Maina, S.Pi., M.Agr., Ph.D., explained that the ventilator was the innovative work by Unhas researchers and students. This involvement is a form of social and academics responsibility working together to help medical personnel.

"This innovation work is the result of a collaborative program between the Institute for Research and Community Development of Unhas and the Directorate of Innovation of Unhas. As a humaniversity campus, Unhas is called to contribute in overcoming the pandemic. Ventilator is a vital instrument at the moment and are needed in large quantities. Therefore, Unhas decided to make ventilators that is easy operation and inexpensive maintenance," explained Citra.

The production of the initial prototype for Venus (Ventilator Unhas) took two weeks. In the production process, Unhas can make 20-30 units per week. The prototype Venus is a research product, so it requires substantial costs. However, the cost has been reduced for large quantities production. The Unhas Research Team has not been able to announce the costs needed. But if there is a request, this team will be able to provide calculations for the budget.

"Venus (Ventilator Unhas) is ready for large quantities production and ready to be the featured product of Unhas. The selling price is estimated to be between Rp. 10,000,000 to Rp. 15,000,000, made of harmless materials and tools and can be used according to health and product safety standards and protocols," said Citra.

Through this innovation, it is hoped that this tool can help patient care. In addition, this tool is also expected to have advantages in terms of competitiveness. As a research product, this product is expected to continue to be developed according to its application in the field.

"We hope this product can be applied in hospitals after obtaining a certificate of eligibility. We are very optimistic, because the operation of this tool is easier," said Citra.
