The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), through the Department of Japanese Literature, successfully held a Chanoyu Workshop: Experiencing the Spirit of Japanese Tea Ceremony on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, at Aula Mattulada. The event brought participants into the refined world of Japanese culture, showcasing the philosophy of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquillity that underpins the traditional tea ceremony.

The workshop was led by Prof. Ishizuka Osamu from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, who guided participants through the meticulous steps of the tea ceremony. With a serene and respectful atmosphere, he demonstrated not only the technical process of preparing matcha tea but also the deeper cultural significance embedded in every gesture. The presence of traditional utensils such as the tea whisk, tea bowl, and kettle further enriched the authenticity of the experience.
Adding to the prestige of the event, Ohashi Koichi, the Head of the Consulate-General of Japan in Makassar, attended and expressed his appreciation for the initiative. His presence symbolised the strong cultural ties and academic collaboration between Japan and Indonesia, particularly through UNHAS. Participants, dressed in yukata and seated in traditional style, had the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in this centuries-old practice.
This workshop not only serves as a cultural demonstration but also as a living bridge between nations. For students and attendees, it was more than just learning about tea—it was an invitation to embrace the values of mindfulness, hospitality, and mutual understanding. Through such programs, UNHAS continues to play an important role in fostering global awareness and intercultural dialogue.
