Marine Biomass and Waste-Based Bioproducts Innovation Centre

Marine Biomass and Waste-Based Bioproducts Innovation Centre is a university center of excellence in science and technology (PUI-PT) that develops bio-based products from marine biomass and takes them through to industrial use (downstreaming). It was set up as a strategic response to a national challenge: using marine biomass sustainably and with high added value.
Tuberculosis Molecular Diagnostics

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease with a very high global burden. Indonesia currently has the second-highest number of TB cases in the world after India, with an estimated 1,060,000 new cases and 134,000 deaths in 2023. The main obstacles to TB control are the large number of undiagnosed cases, especially drug-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB), and the limited availability of fast, accurate diagnostic technology in health services.
The Universitas Hasanuddin center of excellence for molecular TB diagnostics (PUI-PT) is the university’s scientific response to these challenges.
Cultural Heritage Studies and Conservation

Center of Excellence on Maize Technology

The Universitas Hasanuddin Center of Excellence on Maize Technology (PUI-PTOS Jagung) is a science-based research center focused on seed technology, tropical maize breeding and agricultural biotechnology. It brings together expertise in plant breeding, seed physiology, molecular biology and sustainable agriculture to support national food security and the self-reliance of Indonesia’s seed industry.
Through strategic partnerships with national institutions such as BRIN and international partners such as CIMMYT, Khon Kaen University and WS Seeds, the center promotes the development of improved hybrid maize varieties and precision agriculture technology. It also provides training, shares knowledge and puts maize innovations into practice in the field for farmers, industry and policymakers.
Language Learning Technology Development Center

The Language Learning Technology Development Center at the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Hasanuddin, focuses on technology-based innovation in language learning. It develops digital media, interactive modules, applications and multimedia content for teaching a range of languages, and researches the integration of educational technology, including the use of AI. Besides training lecturers and students, the center works with national and international partners to build its capacity and extend the reach of its programs. Committed to leading digital transformation in language education, it responds to the challenges of a global, digital era.
NBRP Oryzias (Medaka Fish)
As science advances, the need for model animals that are efficient, easy to manipulate and biologically relevant is growing. Now that biomedical research, molecular toxicology and modern ecology are closely intertwined, the choice of test animal depends not only on technical convenience but also on scientific value, potential applications, and ecological and economic relevance.

The Center of Excellence on Karst Bioprospecting and Society serves as a specialized institution dedicated to the exploration and sustainable utilization of biological resources within karst ecosystems, emphasizing their ecological, cultural, and societal significance. This center focuses on conducting advanced research to uncover bioactive compounds, preserve biodiversity, and assess the ecological impacts of bioprospecting activities. It also plays a vital role in fostering collaboration among scientists, local communities, and policymakers to promote conservation efforts, equitable benefit-sharing, and awareness of the societal value of karst environments. By integrating scientific innovation with social responsibility, the center aims to sustainably harness karst biodiversity for biotechnological advancements while safeguarding the unique landscapes and cultural heritage associated with these fragile ecosystems.
Center of Excellence on Sapi Bali Polled

The Center of Excellence on Sapi Bali Polled studies the development of polled Bali cattle as a whole, covering genetics and breeding, reproductive and feed technology, and socio-economic aspects. Polled Bali cattle are Bali cattle that are naturally hornless: a variant of the common Bali cattle with the hornless trait. They are developed for several reasons, including easier herd management and potentially better animal welfare, because they have no horns.
