Life in Makassar

Makassar is a welcoming port city on the island of Sulawesi, known for its seafood and its sunsets over Losari Beach. Each year international students share their cultures with new Unhas students at the International Student Festival.

Living and studying here

Housing

Live on campus in the student dormitory complex, including International Housing at Ramsis with rooms renovated for international students, stay at the Tamalanrea Homestay, or rent a furnished room (kos) within walking distance of campus.

Faith and food

Most residents of Makassar are Muslim, so halal food is the norm and there is a mosque within reach almost everywhere, including on campus. Churches and temples serve the city’s other communities.

Learning Indonesian

The Language Service Unit teaches Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA). Student volunteers run the Bahasa Indonesia and Culture Class, which also teaches everyday phrases in the Makassar dialect.

Community

A student volunteer buddy helps you settle in. Join student clubs, the International Student Festival and Geo-Series talks about your home country, and the host family programme lets you spend Ramadan with local families.

Orientation, safety and immigration

Before you travel, a virtual Pre-Arrival Orientation covers immigration, registration, housing and culture. Every semester the International Student Orientation welcomes new students, and the International Office holds briefings on immigration rules and personal safety.

In their words

Laurenz Thiele, Graduate School student from Germany

“The professors are knowledgeable and approachable, and my supervisors are always supportive when I need guidance. There are also many student clubs and associations that warmly welcome new members.”

Binta Rosline Roberts, Faculty of Agriculture alumna from Sierra Leone, now a lecturer at the University of Makeni

“The university provides opportunities for students to participate in community service and practical field activities. These experiences allow us to apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges, particularly in agriculture and food development.”

Prof. Babatunde Olamide Bamgbos, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria; international lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry

“Serving as an international lecturer and specialist at the Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University has been a rewarding experience. The university fosters a dynamic academic environment that supports international collaboration, knowledge exchange, and the advancement of education and research.”

Scholarships

Most international students at Unhas fund their own studies, and the low total cost makes that possible. Unhas also funds international students through two scholarships of its own, and government programmes bring students to Indonesia.

UNHAS LEADS Scholarship

A partial scholarship for students from developing countries (the guide lists the eligible countries) in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes. It covers the whole development fee and lowers tuition: most bachelor’s programmes then cost IDR 4,000,000–10,500,000 a semester instead of IDR 17,850,000, master’s programmes IDR 7,500,000–11,500,000 and doctoral programmes IDR 12,000,000–20,000,000. It runs for 7 semesters (bachelor’s), 3 (master’s) or 5 (doctoral). Bachelor’s applicants must be 21 or younger on 1 September of the year they apply. Download the UNHAS LEADS Scholarship 2026 guide (PDF, 4.5 MB), with the fee for every programme.

Hasanuddin University Presidential Scholarship

For master’s and doctoral programmes by research, open to applicants from any country. It covers the development fee and tuition, plus research funding where your supervisor’s Thematic Research Group provides it, for 3 semesters (master’s) or 5 (doctoral). Publishing is part of the programme: master’s students present at an international conference and publish at least one article in a Scopus- or Web of Science-indexed journal; doctoral students present twice and publish at least two articles. Contact a potential supervisor before you apply. Download the Presidential Scholarship 2026 guide (PDF, 3.3 MB).

KNB Scholarship

The Indonesian Government’s Developing Countries Partnership Scholarship covers tuition, a monthly allowance, insurance and return flights. Unhas is a host university. Applications usually open in February through Indonesian embassies.

Indonesian AID Scholarship (TIAS)

For citizens of more than 60 priority countries, with preference for public-sector staff. It covers tuition, allowance, flights, visa, insurance and up to six months of Indonesian language training.

Government partnerships

Some governments sponsor their citizens at Unhas through bilateral programmes. Ask your ministry of education.

Questions

Do I need to speak Indonesian?

Not for the English-taught programmes. For programmes taught in Indonesian, you first take the BIPA course. Basic Indonesian makes daily life much easier either way.

How much is tuition?

A regular-class bachelor’s programme costs IDR 17,850,000 a semester plus a one-time development fee of IDR 40,650,000. Master’s programmes cost IDR 22,750,000–24,350,000 a semester and doctoral programmes IDR 26,000,000–27,650,000. International Class, Medicine and Dentistry fees are higher; see the table above.

Are there scholarships for international students?

Yes. The UNHAS LEADS Scholarship covers the development fee and lowers tuition for students from developing countries, and the Presidential Scholarship covers the development fee and tuition for research master’s and doctoral students from any country. The Indonesian Government’s KNB and TIAS scholarships also bring students to Unhas.

Can I work while I study?

No. The student visa does not allow paid work, so plan your budget without income from work.

How long does the whole process take?

About five months from application to arrival: up to a month for selection and about three months for the study permit and visa.

How much money do I need to show for the visa?

A bank statement for the last three months showing at least USD 2,000.

Is my degree recognised in my country?

In International Housing at Ramsis on campus, or in a private furnished room (kos) near campus from about IDR 800,000 a month.
