AHEC 2023 Series #8, Rector of Hasanuddin University Presents Education Challenges of ASEAN Countries

Hasanuddin University hosted the ASEAN Higher Education Conference (AHEC) 2023 Communique Webinar Series #8 with the topic “Higher Education and Industry Connectivity (HEIC) in ASEAN Maritime Sector” which took place during and connected live streaming through the Unhas and Unpad YouTube channels, at 16.00 WIta, Wednesday (26/7).

AHEC 2023 Communique Webinar Series #8 is an international conference that aims to bring together academics from higher education lecturers, students, as well as government and industry representatives from ASEAN countries, in order to discuss strategic and collaborative steps related to the role of higher education as a catalyst for growth.

The agenda discusses the main issues, namely strengthening the Penta helix to improve the university’s employment ranking and industrial growth, the future of higher education in accelerating innovation and optimizing digital technology, and the role of higher education in building resilient communities and promoting environmental sustainability.

Hasanuddin University Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.S became one of the main speakers at this conference by explaining strengthening the concept of “ASEAN matters: Epicenter of Growth”. Explaining the various challenges faced by ASEAN countries in preparing a highly skilled workforce in the future which will be the main key to achieving prosperity.

Furthermore, Prof. JJ explained the connectivity between the idea of higher education and the needs of industry, especially in the development of the digitalization era. Various educational challenges faced by ASEAN countries, some countries are still struggling to provide access to higher education and while others are in difficulty, and among them are categorized as world-class universities. which are influenced by a number of factors, including poverty, gender inequality, and lack of qualifications.

“ASEAN countries are working to integrate their higher education systems, but a number of challenges remain including differences in language, culture, and curriculum. So that through the digitization of education, digital technology can help increase access to more affordable and quality education, although there is no denying the existence of digital trade, “explained Prof. JJ.

Apart from the Rector of Unhas, other speakers also presented their material to approximately 1,000 participants who attended online from various countries.
