Department of Microbiology UNHAS Hold Guest Lecture on Global Issue of Antimicrobial Resistance

The Faculty of Medicine (FK), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), through the Department of Microbiology, organized an international academic event titled Guest Lecture with the theme “Antimicrobial Resistance in The Netherlands,” presented by Prof. Steven Thijsen, MD., Ph.D. The event, held on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, was officially opened by Prof. Dr. dr. Rina Masadah, Sp.PA., M.Phil., DFM, Vice Dean for Publication, Community Engagement, and International Affairs of the Faculty of Medicine UNHAS. In her opening remarks, Dr. Rina emphasized that this guest lecture is part of the Faculty’s efforts to strengthen international academic collaboration and broaden the academic community’s perspective on global health issues, particularly antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Prof. Rina highlighted that antimicrobial resistance is a global challenge that requires interdisciplinary and international collaboration. Through this activity, participants were given the opportunity to learn directly from the Netherlands’ experience, a country recognized for its excellent antimicrobial resistance control system.

During the lecture session, Prof. Steven Thijsen, a clinical microbiology expert from the Netherlands, discussed the current situation of antimicrobial resistance in his country and outlined the strategies implemented by the Dutch government and health institutions to address this pressing issue. He underscored the importance of prudent antibiotic use, enhanced laboratory surveillance, and collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and the public to curb the rise of antimicrobial resistance.

The event was attended by undergraduate medical students, participants of the Specialist Medical Education Program (PPDS), and lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine UNHAS. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm during the interactive discussion session, engaging in comparative dialogue about antimicrobial resistance control policies in Indonesia and the Netherlands. Through this event, the Faculty of Medicine and the Department of Microbiology UNHAS reaffirmed their commitment to advancing medical science through research-based learning and international collaboration in facing global health challenges.
