Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) held an international conference entitled “The 5th International Conference on Biophysical Technology in Dentistry which took the theme “Optimizing Plants and Approaches in Pandemic Dental Treatment.” The Faculty of Dentistry, in collaboration with Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted this conference virtually through zoom meeting application at 09.00 WITA on Thursday (25/03)
This conference presented 14 speakers from 8 countries; Prof. Dr. Chandan Upadhaya, MDS., (Kathmandu University, Nepal), Prof. Mark Tennant, BDSc., Ph.D., W.Aust., AFCHSE., FICD (University of Western, Australia), Prof. Lih-Jyh Fuh., DDS., Ph.D., FICD (China Medical University, Taiwan), Prof. Hong-Keun Hyun, DDS., MSD., Ph.D. (Seoul National University, South Korea), Dr. Priyanka Sakhavalkar, BDS., MDS., M.Sc., (Alder Hey Children Hospital, Liverpool, United Kingdom), Dr. Ajay Bhoosreddy (University of Health Science, India) and Prof. Junichi Asaumi, DDS., MDsc (Okayama University, Japan)
Dean of Faculty of Dentistry of Unhas, drg. Muhammad Ruslin, M.Kes., Ph.D., SpBM(K) stated that this activity was conducted to provide a space for the development of knowledge, expanding networks and experiences, and discussing the role and the development of dentistry.
On the same occasion, Dean of Faculty of Dentistry of Unair, Dr. drg. Agung Sosiawan, M.Kes, expressed his gratitude to be involved in this conference, ICoBTD. The pandemic of Covid-19 is currently becoming the most challenging that is exceedingly potential to hinder various lifelines, including dentists’ activities. Commitment is highly required to keep improving health services amid this pandemic era.
Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of Unhas, Prof. dr. Muh. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D., officially opened this conference. In his remarks, he said that Unhas always supports many activities that could encourage or lead ways to reach World Class University, one of which is internationalization.
Furthermore, Prof. Nasrum explained that Unhas has committed to improving its quality and reputation at both national and international levels. This such activity will pave the way for collaborative research and publications and Unhas journals and participants.
“We hope that this such activity can continue to be optimized. Currently, Unhas continues to strive for quality improvement from various aspects, especially international reputation through WCU,” said Prof. Nasrum.
After the official opening, the event continued to the speakers’ material presentation divided into several sessions.
Prof. Dr. Chandan Upadhaya, MDS., (Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Director, Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, Nepal) started the initial session of the presentation discussing “Routine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Its Complications for General Dental Practitioner – An Overview.” He described the oral and maxillofacial surgery process and the complications that may occur.
Prof. Chandan explained the scope of work of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, which consists of surgical cancer treatment, tumor removal, and reconstruction. He also discussed microvascular free tissue transfer, surgery for craniofacial facial defects, correction of congenital facial deformities, dental surgeries including implants, jaw, temporomandibular joints, salivary glands, and surgery for facial-aesthetic improvement.
ICoBTD was scheduled to last until Saturday (27/03), with presentations from the speakers. The implementation of the first day would end at 15.00 WITA.
