Hasanuddin University Affirms Support for Participants with Disabilities in UTBK 2025, Prepares Accessible Facilities and Assistance

Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) has demonstrated its full commitment to inclusivity by providing an accessible and supportive environment for 16 participants with disabilities during the 2025 National Computer-Based Written Examination (UTBK-SNBT). The examination is being held from April 23 to May 3, 2025, and these 16 participants are among the 21,813 registrants who selected UNHAS as their test location.

The Head of the Hasanuddin University Disability Centre (PUSDIS UNHAS), Dr. Ishak Salim, stated that this is the first year UNHAS has implemented dedicated services for participants with disabilities during examinations. The university designated the Faculty of Law’s Computer Laboratory as an accessible testing site, equipped with sound-enabled computers for participants with low vision, mobility assistance volunteers, and sign language interpreters for Deaf participants. Despite its strong commitment, Dr. Ishak acknowledged that the preparation process has not been without challenges, particularly in ensuring seamless coordination and readiness across all service areas.

“One of the challenges we faced is the central regulation that requires participants to remove their hearing aids during the exam,” explained Dr. Ishak. “Hearing aids are not headsets—they are medical devices essential to the users’ basic functioning. This regulation does not fully reflect an understanding of disability rights. Our goal is to ensure that participants feel prepared not just academically, but also mentally and emotionally.”

As one of the official examination centres, Hasanuddin University is committed to providing optimal services for participants with disabilities through intensive collaboration between the local committee, PUSDIS UNHAS, and the central coordinating team in Jakarta.

In total, 10 participants with hearing disabilities (Deaf), 1 participant with low vision, and 5 participants with physical disabilities sat for the exam, with test sessions distributed over 10 days. PUSDIS UNHAS also conducted comprehensive preparation sessions, including training on assistive technology such as NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) for participants with low vision, and peer guidance from UNHAS Deaf students to support their fellow test-takers.

Field challenges were primarily encountered during the registration process. Several participants with disabilities did not mark the disability status column when registering, which led to their needs going undetected initially. However, this did not hinder their opportunity to take the exam, as PUSDIS UNHAS volunteers stepped in to provide assistance and support.

Beyond the UTBK SNBT pathway, Hasanuddin University also offers a Disability Affirmation Pathway for prospective students from vulnerable groups. This year, a quota of 10 seats has been allocated specifically for students with disabilities. This initiative reflects UNHAS’s strong commitment to expanding access, not merely to fulfil quotas, but to ensure that students with disabilities can thrive and grow within the campus environment.

The implementation of UTBK SNBT at UNHAS has provided valuable insights. Key areas for reflection include the need for better synchronisation of participant data and increased flexibility in national regulations. Continuous improvements will be pursued to establish Hasanuddin University as an inclusive and equitable academic environment for all.
