The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Hasanuddin (FISIP Unhas), established an online public lecture on “Global Encounters: Makassar-Northern Australia Historical Relationship” delivered by Lily Yulianti Farid, Ph.D. (Monash University, Australia). The activity took place virtually through the zoom meeting application on Thursday (09/09).

The Dean of FISIP Unhas, Prof. Dr. Armin Arsyad, M.Sc., said that this topic could explain the longstanding good relations between Indonesia and Australia. The historical connections of the two regions are an influential factor in strengthening the relationship.

The webinar was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Partnerships, Prof. dr. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D. In his remarks, he said that the guest lecture was a forum for scientific development and one of Unhas’ strategic steps to expand and build partnerships.

“This webinar series involves all faculties to establish a webinar according to their respective fields. Today’s webinar was conducted by The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. This form of collaboration is an opportunity for all parties to support Unhas’ target as World-Class University (WCU). This year is exceptional for Unhas because Unhas has been included in the world rankings. This proves our good cooperation from all internal parties in Unhas,” explained Prof. Nasrum.

After the opening remark, the speaker, Lily, presented her topic about “Makassar-Marege: The Future of Our Shared History”. In general, she explained about the global research project currently conducted by other researchers on Australian history. She also gave an overview of the life of the indigenous Australians (Aborigines) who were not touched by modernity.

The activity was attended by approximately 200 participants and guided by Nurul Ichsani, M.I.Kom (Lecturer of Communication Studies at Unhas).
