Lecturers and Students of Faculty of Pharmacy of Universitas Hasanuddin Carried out Research Collaboration in Japan and Produced Q1 Journal Articles

Hasanuddin University, through the Faculty of Pharmacy, held collaborative research with researchers from Kanazawa University, Japan. The research, which has been carried out since October 2019, has produced articles published in highly reputable international journals.

Firzan Nainu, Ph.D., who is a researcher from the Faculty of Pharmacy, was selected to participate in international collaborative research funded by AMED-PRIME Japan. At the same time, Firzan also guided four students of Pharmacy Unhas who were selected to participate in a fully-funded student exchange for a year from JASSO Japan.

Firzan explained that four students of Pharmacy Unhas were selected to join a program called Kanazawa University Short-term Exchange Program for Science and Technology (KUEST). Besides doing their research in the fields of science and technology, participants also had the opportunity to learn Japanese, culture, and society.

Participants, who took part in KUEST, receive living expenses for a year (October 2019 to September 2020) and free tuition and research fees. They are Ayu Masyita, Nur Rahma Rumata, Ayun Dwi Astuti, and Budiman Yasir.

“We conducted genetic screening to mutants, which was made by the latest genome editing method (CRISPR-Cas9) to find new genes and pathways related to sterile inflammation,” Firzan said.

The research took place at the Laboratory Host Defense and Responses, Kanazawa University, Japan. Lab. In the laboratory, they developed the latest methods using the fruit flies model (Drosophila Melanogaster).

This international research collaboration resulted in a reputable paper journal for the field of immunology, namely Frontiers in Immunology, on March 6, 2020.

“In this paper, our team reports on the method of purification and characterization of Monalysin, a toxin produced by pseudomonas entomophila. This paper is one of many papers that, Insha Allah, will be published by Laboratory Host Defense and Responses,” said Firzan.

Firzan explained that besides the publication, he had published two papers in the IF journal Q1 (Journal of Biochemistry and Frontiers in Biosciences Landmark Edition) in 2019. Currently, he is also in the process of writing a collaborative manuscript with America and Cameroon. (* )
