The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) again held Virtual International Symposium series seven with the theme “New Advance in Dental Biomaterials”. Prof. Yung-Kang Shen (College of Oral Medicine School of Dental Technology, Taipei Medical University, Taiwan) was invited as the main speaker.
The symposium, a part of the FKG Unhas 38th Anniversary series, started virtually at 14.00 WITA through the zoom meeting application and live streaming on the FKG Unhas youtube channel, Friday (26/02).
Starting the activity, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muh. Restu, MP., expressed his gratitude to the speakers for taking the time to share knowledge and experiences at Unhas. This activity is a forum for exchanging information related to developments in the medical field, especially in the field of dentistry.
“We hope that the participants can take advantage of this forum to build a network, find and examine the latest research ideas, as well as find information for learning materials for students,” said Prof. Restu.
In his presentation, Prof. Yung Kang discussed “The Nano-Topology Influence of the Nanostructure of Biomedical Thin Film on the Behavior of Osteoblast – Like Cell”. This research was made of nanopillars (polylactic acid (PIA) and polycarbonate (PC)) with an AAO template, using nanoimprints to examine surface properties and observe osteoblast-like cell behaviour.
From the study, Prof. Yung Kang showed that cell adhesion and spread can be affected by surface topographic features at the nanometer level. This study concludes that nanostructures can behave like osteoblasts. Significant differences in adhesion and cell proliferation depending on the shape and contact area of the nanostructures.
After delivering the presentation, it continued to a discussion session and QnA session from the participants.
Prof. Yung Kang’s presentation was guided by Dr. drg. Maria Tanumihardja, Md.Sc., (Lecturer at the Department of Conservative Dentistry, FKG Unhas) as moderator. This activity was attended by more than 100 participants and ran smoothly until 16.00 WITA.
