The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, delivered a public lecture for new students of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries (FIKP Unhas) under the subject “Improving Human Resources for Sustainable Development”. The public lecture was conducted virtually through the Zoom meeting application and connected directly to the FIKP Unhas YouTube channel at 09.30 WITA on Friday (13/08).
The Dean of FIKP Unhas, Dr. Ir. St. Aisjah Farhum, M.Si, officially opened the activity. She said that this lecture was the first lecture for new students from the class of 2021.
On the same occasion, Aisjah also said that students are significant in supporting the 14th SDGs goal, “Life Below Water”. This goal is related to the utilization of community welfare through sustainable exploration practices. Furthermore, she suggested all students keep strengthening their commitments to become graduates who play an active role in bringing benefits to society.
In his lecture, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said that the 14th SDGs was one strategy to improve the management of Maritime, Marine, and Fisheries as contained in the National Medium-Term Development Planning (RPJMN) 2020-2024. These strategic steps include improving the quality and potential human resources, technological innovation, marine research, and strengthening databases.
In relation to the commitment to implementing the 14th SDGs, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and other partners strive to strengthen Indonesia’s fisheries potential. Through conservation efforts, monitoring, and utilization, the steps are taken care of by implementing three breakthrough programs that lead to the interests and sustainability of national marine and fisheries.
The programs increase non-tax state revenues from the capture fisheries sub-sector to improve fishermen’s welfare, develop aquaculture that impacts increasing exports supported by marine and fishery research, and develop fishing villages based on local wisdom in several areas.
“There will be several efforts carried out by the KKP (The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries) in increasing fishery productivity, one of which is by implementing a measurable policy of fishing and cultivating and maintaining coastal ecosystems. Therefore, I invite the entire Unhas academic community to be part of this program to oversee policies in accordance with the three pillars of higher education,” said Sakti.
At the end of his material, Sakti emphasized that human resources were the most determining factor. Therefore, it is necessary to transform development from human resources with low capacity to high capacity and from exploration of raw materials to the processed materials to increase the production value.
