Universitas Hasanuddin, through the Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Science (CEISS) Graduate School, once again held a Graduate Seminar Series with the theme “The Science, Policy, and Economics of Carbon Farming in the Asia-Pacific Region.”
The activity was attended by Dr. Sebastian Thomas, Senior Researcher of the Australia-Indonesia Center (AIC) / PAIR and lecturer at the University of Melbourne. It took place in the Hall of Prof. Fachruddin, Graduate School of Unhas, Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Monday (10/02).
On this occasion, Dr. Thomas explained several discussion topics: Science of Carbon, Carbon in Policy, Economic of Carbon, Aboriginal Firestick Farming, and Blue Carbon in The Asia-Pacific. The concept of carbon economics or carbonomics will be valuable in the future. Carbonomics puts carbon calculations into a tool to encourage environmental sustainability and save the earth from the threat of climate change impacts that have been widely felt today.
The Carbon economy can encourage environmental sustainability because it does not use many energy sources that emit carbon dioxide, so this can reduce the effect of greenhouse gases into the biosphere while reducing the impact of global warming.
“Many regions have designed strategies for using low-carbon economies by using renewable energy and utilizing sustainable development. Therefore, efforts to realize a carbon economy have been considered as one of the solutions to the problem of climate change, “explained Thomas.
On the same occasion, Dr. Sudirman Nasir, who is also the Director of CEISS Unhas, emphasized that studies from various other disciplines are needed to solve environmental problems. As an interdisciplinary centre of excellence and sustainability, CEISS will encourage interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and collaboration at Unhas. Such as inviting various speakers, researchers, and practitioners from various backgrounds and disciplines.
The activity, which approximately 100 participants from Unhas academics attended, continued until 12.00 WITA. (*)
