The latest data issued by Webometrics indicated that Universitas Hasanuddin ranks have risen from the last period (published in January 2016). The Webometrics data during January 2016 positioned Unhas in the 12th rank, meanwhile as of present time during the July 2016 issue, Unhas rose to the 11th position. It is further known, that previous figures released in July 2015, Unhas was still in the 19th position. “This indicates that in the period of 1 year, based upon the Webometrics rankings, the institution has increased by eight ranks, out lapping substantial higher education institutions in the state. The latest release of Webo shows how we have surpassed ITS, that decreased to the 12th position,” elaborated by the Unhas Rector, Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, M.A., responding to the mass media and social media comments that have outlined that this institution, the best in Eastern Indonesia, is showing deficiencies in its achievements. The latest that matter that been covered in mass medias were, the failure of Unhas in achieving any positions during the 29th PIMNAS in IPB, surpassed by UMI (Universitas Muslim Indonesia) that was in the 11th position.
According to Dwia, one of the benchmarks to measure the performances of higher education institutions can be based on the Webometrics itself. “Webometrics ranks reflect real-life performances of a higher education institution. The indicators used by Webometrics are strict. For example, the indicators of excellence are formulated based on the amount of articles written by our lecturers that are of Scopus indexed, Scimago, or Google Scholar. So this is no joke,” echoed the Unhas Rector that happens to also be included in the 71 inspiring women of Indonesia. “Even for the category of excellence, continued Dwia, Unhas positioned in the 6th rank nationally, surpassing Universitas Padjajaran (7), Universitas Brawijaya (10), Universitas Airlangga (14) and Institute Teknologi Surabaya (17),” she added.
If based on the ranks of various higher education institutions in Eastern Indonesia, we must be proud of the milestones achieved and strive to reach greater successes and achievements. Dwia stated that several institutions of higher learning are far from the ranks of Unhas, including Universitas Sam Ratulangi (41), Universitas Pattimura (53), Universitas Negeri Makassar (64), Universitas Mulawarman (88), Universitas Haluoleo (162), UMI (210), and Universitas Bosowa (385).
The rankings released by the Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Higher Education at the end of 2015, positioned Unhas as the 6th highest ranked university for research and scientific conducts. “Positioned in the highest rank still is ITB, followed by IPB, UGM, UI, and Unpad. Below Unhas are UNS, ITS, Unibraw, and Undip,” stated Dwia.
For patents, continued the Rector, in 2016, Unhas consisted of 75 patents and 15 products registered under Unhas. “This reflects a significant progress compared to the past years, in which only 45 patents and eight products were under the institution’s name,” she stated. “Of course we need to be fortunate of this achievement, but cannot be complacent, as other universities are also accelerating their accomplishments,” hoped the Unhas Rector.
Though proud of the achievements attained, Unhas Rector stated that she was not fully satisfied. Especially seeing the potentials Unhas comprises of. “We will continuously push our academic performances and research based on IT, to achieve higher levels. As of now, we are ranked in the 59th position in Southeast Asia. Our target is to have a significant position in the world ranks,” echoed enthusiastically by Dwia.
Webometrics is a university-ranking instrument of high quality that is based on the web. The ranking system is developed by Cybermetrics Lab in Madrid, Spain. Webo is assembled based on four variables, which are the Presence Rank, Impact Rank, Openness Rank, and Excellence Rank. Since 2004, Webometrics have always released the University rankings of all universities in the world, scheduled at the end of January and July each year.
