Universitas Hasanuddin Collaborate with Voice of America (VOA) and Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) Discussing Public Media Literacy in Digital Era

Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), Voice of America (VOA) Indonesian Service, and Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) Makassar held a webinar (Webinar Wilayah Tengah) on Strengthening Media Literacy in the Digital Age in Indonesia and the United States. The webinar was conducted online using the Zoom Meeting application on Saturday (2/10).

This activity is part of “VoA Goes to Campus with AJI”, which establishes the Webinars and Workshops on Digital Journalism.

This event invited speakers: Dian Widyastuti (Digital Lead of VoA Indonesia), Naras Prameswari (Digital Content Producer of VoA Indonesia), Sunarti Sein (Chief Editor of Harian Radar Selatan), and Dr. Alem Febri Sonni (Lecturer of Communication Department, Unhas).

The Director of Communications Unhas, Ir. Suharman Hamzah, Ph.D., explained that the VoA Goes to Campus with AJI is a form of collaboration that has been the focus for realizing Merdeka Belajar (independent learning) and Kampus Merdeka (independent campus).

“Digital Literacy is an essential topic for the students and the academic community. Digital Literacy help students ensure that the information circulating in the community has social benefits. Unhas as a university that carries the principle of humanity consistently supports collaborative efforts to improve social awareness, including through healthy and reliable information,” said Suharman.

Webinar Wilayah Tengah (Central Region Webinar) was part of the VoA Goes to Campus with AJI. Similar activities have previously been carried out in other regions, while Universitas Hasanuddin engaged as a partner for the central region.

The webinar discussed some interesting topics: “The Importance of Digital Journalism Quality in the Middle of Disinformation Era”, “The Practice of Media Literacy in the United States”, “The Practice of Journalism and Media Literacy in Sulawesi”, and “The Role of the Campus to Strengthen Media Literacy”.

The Webinar ended at 12.30 WITA, participated by over 100 participants from various universities in the Central Region of Indonesia. The next series of workshops will be held on October 8th, 2021.
