International Guest Lecture Highlights Orthodontic Management for Children with Cleft

The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), in collaboration with the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya (UM), successfully organised an international guest lecture entitled “Orthodontic Treatment for Children with Cleft” for residents of the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Specialist Programmes.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Siti Adibah Othman from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, Malaysia, a renowned expert in orthodontics and craniofacial care. The session was moderated by Andi Sri Permatasari, drg., Sp.KGA. The event was held on Saturday, 2 May 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Acacia 1 & 2 Room, Claro Hotel, Makassar. The guest lecture was organised as part of the academic activities of the 19th International Indonesian Pediatric Dentistry Association Conference (iiPDAC 19), bringing together experts, academics, and residents to discuss current developments in pediatric dental care and interdisciplinary treatment approaches.

The guest lecture aimed to enrich the knowledge and clinical competence of postgraduate residents in managing orthodontic treatment for children with cleft lip and palate. During her presentation, Prof. Siti Adibah Othman discussed contemporary evidence-based treatment approaches, interdisciplinary care pathways, and clinical considerations in treating pediatric patients with cleft conditions.

The event was attended by academic staff and residents from both the Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Specialist Programmes. Distinguished faculty members present included Prof. Dr. Fajriani, drg., M.Si., Sp.KGA, Head of the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Programme, and Dr. Ardiansyah S. Pawinru, drg., Sp.Ort., Subsp.DDTK (K), Head of the Orthodontics Specialist Programme, along with lecturers and residents from both departments. Their participation reflected the strong commitment of the Faculty of Dentistry, UNHAS, to fostering academic excellence and international collaboration.

An engaging discussion session followed the lecture, allowing participants to exchange ideas and explore real clinical cases involving children with cleft lip and palate. The interactive atmosphere encouraged critical thinking and strengthened participants’ understanding of multidisciplinary treatment planning. This academic activity serves as an important platform for international knowledge exchange and reinforces the long-standing collaboration between UNHAS and UM. Through exposure to global expertise, residents are expected to further develop their competencies in delivering comprehensive and patient-centred orthodontic care for children with craniofacial anomalies.
