UNHAS Joins RI-China Collaborative Initiative for Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation Training

Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) has taken part in a strategic international initiative aimed at boosting rural economies and accelerating community welfare. Represented by Fahrul Irawan, S.Pt., M.Si., Ph.D., a lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Science (FAPET), UNHAS joined a specialized program entitled “Training on Rural Development and Poverty Alleviation in Indonesia,” organized and hosted entirely by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China.

The intensive training program ran from 9 – 22 May 2026, taking place in the capital city of Beijing and Yunnan Province. UNHAS, along with 10 other State Universities, received this valuable opportunity due to their active roles as campus partners in the Indonesian Ministry of Transmigration’s Transmigrasi Patriot (Patriot Transmigration) program. In total, 36 selected Indonesian participants attended, comprising Ministry officials, academics, and rural community representatives.

The comprehensive curriculum designed by the Chinese government focuses heavily on their successful, large-scale frameworks for poverty reduction and rural modernization. Throughout the program, participants engaged in educational modules covering critical sectors such as agricultural innovation, educational reform, and healthcare infrastructure. These subjects demonstrate how systematic, tech-driven improvements in remote areas can drastically lift local standards of living.

A key highlight of the program was the field visit session held in Yunnan Province. This region serves as an ideal living laboratory, allowing Fahrul Irawan and the rest of the Indonesian delegation to observe firsthand the practical mechanisms and “best practices” of China’s rural transformation. By witnessing these successful agricultural and developmental models in real time, UNHAS and the Ministry aim to adapt and implement these proven strategies to revitalize transmigration areas back home in Indonesia.
