Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, UNHAS Hosts Guest Lecture with KAUST Expert to Discuss Coral Reef Productivity

The Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries (FIKP), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), hosted a guest lecture as part of its ongoing efforts to broaden academic horizons and strengthen its international network. Entitled “Quest for the Most Productive Coral Reefs”, the event was held online via Zoom on Thursday, 16 July 2026, from 17:00 to 18:00 WITA.

The event was officially opened by the Vice Dean for Partnerships, Research, Innovation, and Alumni of FIKP UNHAS, Prof. Dr Mukti Zainuddin, S.Pi., M.Si. In his opening remarks, he expressed his appreciation and gratitude to Dr Renato Morais for taking the time to serve as the keynote speaker online and share his expertise with the academic community of FIKP UNHAS. He expressed hope that this event would mark the beginning of broader academic collaboration between FIKP UNHAS and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), particularly in marine research.

The guest lecture was attended by approximately 60 participants, including lecturers, students, researchers, and marine conservation enthusiasts. The session featured Dr Renato Morais from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, as the main speaker, with Andi Alya Yusriyyah, M.Si., a lecturer in the Department of Marine Science at FIKP UNHAS, serving as moderator.

Dr Renato Morais is a research collaborator of Prof. Ambo Tuwo and Dr Syafyudin Yusuf across various international research initiatives. Currently, they are involved in a joint research project in Raja Ampat focusing on coral reef ecosystems and tropical marine productivity. Dr Renato’s participation in this lecture further consolidates academic ties and future research opportunities between FIKP UNHAS and KAUST.

During his presentation, Dr Renato Morais explained the key ecological processes that shape the productivity of coral reef ecosystems. Participants gained valuable insights into current research developments and scientific perspectives regarding coral reef productivity amidst the challenges of climate change and various anthropogenic pressures. The interactive Q&A session sparked lively discussion, with participants raising pertinent questions about marine ecosystem dynamics and conservation strategies.

Through this guest lecture, FIKP UNHAS aims to continually expand the academic insights of its community regarding contemporary advances in marine ecology, while strengthening international partnerships with globally renowned institutions. This initiative underscores the commitment of FIKP UNHAS to delivering high-quality academic forums that support education, research, and innovation in marine science and fisheries.
