Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences of Universitas Hasanuddin (FIKP Unhas) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Malaysia organized a symposium entitled “9th National and 5th International Marine and Fisheries Symposium”.
The activity with the theme “Advancing Marine and Fisheries Sectors to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Healthy Aquatic Environment and Society” took place in the FIKP Hall, 2nd Floor of the New FIKP Unhas Building, Tamalanrea Ca,mpus and broadcasted online via the zoom meeting application on Saturday (04/06).
Chairman of the Committee Dr. Ir. Siti Aslamyah, M.P., in her sp,eech expressed her gratitude for the support and assistance of all partin conductingduct this symposium. This activity is an effort to achieve sustainable development goals, especially point 14 relating to life below the water.
Furthermore, Siti Aslamyah added that this activity presented competent speakers from various fieatfrom both national and internatiolevelsevel. The number of papers collected was 218 manuscripts consisting of 78 papers from the Unhas academic community, 8 papers from UMT, and the rere from other institutions and universities.
“Participants came from various countries such as Thailand, England, C,hina and Malaysia. We hope that this symposium can provide ideas contributionstion in supporting sustainable development, especially in the field of marine and fisheries,” explained Aslamyah.
On the same occasion, representing UMT, Prof. Dr. Mhd. Ikhwanuddin expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with Unhas. He aid, this collaborative activity is one of the strategic steps in supporting sustainability in the marine and fisheries sector which is also one of the goals of achieving SDGs.
The activity was officially opened by the Rector of Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc. In his speech, he said that the sustainability of the marine and fisheries sector is an and requires all sectors’ protestors. Prof. JJ, who is also a marine expert, hopes that the ideas, suggestions, ions, and input from the speakers will make a positive contribution to efforts to achieve the SDGs.
“Currently, many fishermen have difficulty catching fish, and various other problems. This must be considered together, how to present science and technology in the field of marine and fisheries development that has a positive impact on society,” explained Prof. JJ.
With the abundant marine resources owned by Indonesia, it is necessary to reorganize the management of these resources with sustainable principles to maintain the sustainability and diversity of Indonesia’s marine biota.
After the official opening, the event proceeded to the presentation of material from the speakers. The initial material was delivered by I Nyoman Radiarta, Ph.D., from the Marine and Fisheries Research and Human Resources Agency (BRSDM KP) related to “Advancing the Marine and Fisheries Sector to Achieve SDGs for a Healthy Aquatic Environment and Society”.
Nyoman Radiarta said the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries actively participates in the achievement of SDGs through membership of the High-Levelevel Panel – Sustainable Ocean Economy. KKP’s role in realizing point 14 in the SDGs in Indonesia is carried out in various programs and policies while still considering ecology and economy.
“BRSDM supports KKP in achieving SDGs through education, training, course, ling and business incubation. Water conservation and marine space management are implemented through increasing the area of national marine conservation areas and managing marine space for various activities,” Nyoman Radiarta explained.
As scheduled, the FIKP Unhas Symposium will last until Sunday (05/06). On the first day, the activity lasted until 16.00 WITA with the presentation of papers from the participants.
