Faculty of Pharmacy and James Cook University Collaboratively Conducted An International Conference Called Student 4 Student

Faculty of Pharmacy of Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) collaborated with James Cook University (JCU) to establish an international conference entitled “Students 4 Student Conference”. This conference aims to support students from both universities to share their research results using posters or computer presentations. The activity took place virtually through the zoom meeting application at 08.00 WITA on Wednesday (31/03).

The activity was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Subehan, M. Pharm.Sc., Ph.D., Apt. In his remarks, Prof. Subehan hoped the conference could expand networks and broaden students’ insights. In addition, Prof. Subehan also gave a brief description of the Unhas and the Faculty of Pharmacy to the participants.

“JCU is one of the excellent universities that collaborate with the Faculty of Pharmacy of Unhas and can facilitate students a forum like this. I believe that the students’ enthusiasm will increase due to various research topics presented,” explained Prof. Subehan.

After the official opening, the participants from the Faculty of Pharmacy and JCU presented their research results in a plenary session. Each presenter had 12 minutes to present the results of the research.

Kate Parrish, a student from JCU, presented a research topic on “Experimental Infection of Juvenile Myuchelys Latisternum with Bellinger River Virus (BRV).” Parrish studies the Bellinger River Turtle that lives in the small coastal drainage of the Bellinger River in New South Wales, Australia. In 2015, she found that more than 450 sea turtles were dead and dying caused by unknown factors. This shocking finding was recorded as one of the highest rates of the sudden death of sea turtles in this decade.

Nur Rahma Rumata (Unhas student) also had a chance to present her research result on “The Immunosuppressive Effect of Secang Wood (Caesalpinia Sappan L.) extract in Drosophila Melanogaster.” Rahma explained the Secang plant (Caesalpinia sappan L.), a plant that is often found in Indonesia. This plant can be used as a substitute for chemical drugs because it has a high content of phenols and flavonoids with biological activity as anti-inflammatory and antioxidants.

After each presentation was complete, the speakers provided a question and answer session. The conference ended at 15.00 WITA
