Faculty of Engineering Held an International Conference, ICOMAREST 2021

Department of Marine System Engineering, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), conducted an international conference called “The 1st International Conference on Marine Research and Technology (ICOMAREST) 2021”. The conference was conducted online due to the pandemic using the zoom meeting application on Tuesday (05/10). The theme for this year conference is “Developing Advanced Marine Technology for Optimal Natural Maritime Resources Exploration”.

The conference invited speakers from three countries: Prof. Takuji Waseda (Tokyo University, Japan), Prof. Ahmad Fitriadhy (Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia), dr. Rudiyanto (Indonesian Classification Bureau, Indonesia), Dr. Oleksiy Bondarenko (National Maritime Research Institite (NMRI), Jepang), and Dr. Ing. Michael Baldauf (Hochschule Wismar, Jerman).

Balqis Shintarahayu ST., M.Si., explained that ICOMAREST is an annual conference conducted by the Department of Marine System Engineering and part of the Anniversary of the Faculty of Engineering. The participants came from different countries. Papers that have met the qualifications will be published, either in journals or proceedings indexed by Scopus.

On the same occasion, the head of the Marine Systems Engineering department, Dr. Eng. Ir. Faisal Mahmuddin, ST., M.inf.Tech., M.Eng., conveyed that the international conference was conducted by collaborating with various partners. This conference was divided into 18 sub-topics: Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Hydrodynamics, Ship Engine Installation and Repairment, etc.

The conference was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Partnership. In his remarks, he appreciates this conference because it supports the internationalisation of Unhas. This discussion is expected to contribute to the development of research in Maritime Technology for the optimal exploration and utilisation of natural resources.

“Unhas’ performance over the past year has experienced a significant increase. In Times Higher Education, Unhas is included in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking and ranked in the Scimago Institutions Ranking. This accomplishment was achieved thanks to the involvement and collaboration of all units and elements in Unhas,” explained Prof. Nasrum

After the official opening, the event moved to presentations from all speakers.

Prof. Takuji Waseda delivered a topic of “Ocean Information: A Bridge Between Science and Engineering”. This topic was about the freak waves and ship response useful for advancing ship design and assessing energy resources related to oceanographic waves. He also discussed the rules and guidelines and the sailing-assisted ship paths to identify the inherent uncertainties of oceanographic information and engineering optimisation.

Rudiyanto from Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) presented a topic on the role and function of BKI to classify Indonesian-flagged commercial vessels and foreign-flagged vessels regularly operating in Indonesian waters. Indonesian Classification Bureau (BKI) is a Governmental Organisation engaged in the vessel classification based on hull construction, machinery, and electricity installation, in a bid to evaluate the vessel’s merit to sail.

Approximately 200 participants followed the activity. The ICOMERST 2021 is scheduled to last until Wednesday (06/10) with a paper presentation agenda that the committee has received.
