Indonesian Diaspora Webinar by Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Science on “Maritime Dynamics in Indonesia”

The Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences (Fakultas Ilmu Kelautan dan Perikanan/FIKP) of Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) held a Diaspora webinar entitled “Maritime Dynamics in Indonesia”. The activity, which presented R. Dwi Susanto, Ph.D., (University Maryland, USA) as a speaker, took place virtually through the zoom meeting application, Tuesday (8/9).

The activity was officially opened by Dr. Mahatma, S.T., M.Sc., as the Unhas Partnership Director. In his speech, he said that this webinar brought many benefits to the Unhas academic community and other participants in general. With webinars like this, students are expected to improve their skills and knowledge in related fields.

“So it’s essential to hear how technology is developing. This webinar can build a wider network of partnerships. Unhas currently continues to optimize itself in WCU with various strategic means, one of which is a useful webinar introducing Unhas to many people, both nationally and internationally,” explained Mahatma.

Susanto discussed the Maritime Dynamics in Indonesia. He said that the dynamics of Indonesia’s maritime and climate are very complex. We must understand that oceanic and atmospheric forcings affect them, such as arlindo (Indonesian Throughflow), monsoon, ENSO (El Nino and La Nina), and so on.

Furthermore, Susanto added that the distribution of biological and chemical content as a passive tracer means there is movement caused by ocean dynamics. We also need to watch out for the possibility of coral bleaching (hot temperatures, low sea levels). Thus, we can take lessons from the swings of Indonesia’s climate.

“Our sea is vast, and there are many marine fields that are managed by humans. Therefore, let us protect and preserve the sea for the welfare of the nation,” said Susanto.

The activity guided by Dr. Muhammad Lukman was attended by approximately 300 participants.
