Indonesian Diaspora Webinar by Faculty of Cultural Science on “Cultural Studies: Opportunities and Challenges”

The Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), held a Diaspora webinar with the theme “Opportunities and Challenges of Cultural Studies”. It was conducted online via the zoom meeting application on Saturday (25/09).

The Dean of FIB Unhas Prof. Dr. Akin Duli, MA., explained that cultural studies influence understanding culture. Studying culture means having the courage to redefine culture as a process of meaning.

In the era of industrial technology 4.0, society faces challenges and opportunities in cultural studies. Prof. Akin hopes that this webinar will become a valuable forum for an in-depth understanding of cultural studies in the digital era.

The activity was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Unhas, Prof. dr. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D. In his remarks, he said that Unhas carried out the activity to make a forum for scientific development and a strategic step to expand and build partnerships to support Unhas’ achievements in WCU Program.

In the era of industrial technology 4.0, challenges and opportunities in studying culture are felt by various community groups. Prof. Akin hopes that this webinar will become a helpful forum for an in-depth understanding of cultural studies in the digital era.

In the modern era, many scientists recognize the existence of something called the other in human civilization. This reality is a new paradigm in cultural studies. Things like this are not impossible in the form of post-anthropology and sociology.

“Currently, we are faced with various challenges in cultural studies. I see the need to develop art studies and performance studies that provide opportunities for our generation to develop their knowledge. In essence, cultural studies is a study in itself so as not to fall into subjectivity. Researchers must be critical so as not to fall into personal views in viewing a culture,” explained Dr. Suryadi.

The activity guided by Yusriana, MM (Lecturer of the Department of Archeology, FIB Unhas) was attended by approximately 200 participants.
