Indonesian Diaspora Webinar by Faculty of Engineering on “Study and Research to Become World Class University”

The Faculty of Engineering (Fakultas Teknik/FT) of  Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) and the Chiba University of Japan collaboratively conducted a public lecture discussing “Study and Research to Become World Class University”. The event was conducted online using Zoom Meeting on Wednesday (08/09).

The event presented Prof. Josaphat Tetuko Sri Sumantyo, Ph.D., an Indonesian diaspora in Japan. He currently serves as a full-time Professor (permanent staff) at the Center for Environmental Remote Sensing(CEReS), Chiba University, Japan, and at Electrical Engineering, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). He also actively participates in various events as a guest speaker in many universities around the world.

In his biography, Prof. Josaphat has productively published 129 journal articles, published 488 conference papers, and published 15 books. The scientific career of Prof. Josaphat is renowned worldwide as one of the patent holders of microstrip antennas (a disc-shaped antenna 12 centimetres in diameter and 1.6 millimetres thick) that can be used to communicate directly with satellites. He is also the inventor of circularly polarized synthetic aperture for drones and small satellites and 3-dimensional weather forecasting radar.

Prof. Josaphat is an analytical expert on microwave scattering theory and its application to microwave (radar) remote sensing, particularly synthetic aperture radar (SAR), subsurface radar (VLF and Microwave), analysis and design of printed antennas for mobile satellite communications, and synthetic aperture radar (SAR).

On that occasion, Prof. Josaphat explained the results of his research which began in 1995-1999 by developing the High Current Low Frequency (VLF) Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). During his research period, which focused on the area of expertise in designing radar system integration. Prof. Josapth has created the innovation “The Work of the Children of the Nation: Eyes of Garuda Radar, Radar Sensing All Terrain and Weather,” which is helpful for monitoring disasters, marine, and fishery natural resources, used for search and rescue, and detecting anti-terrorist security.

“In presenting an invention, we must enjoy and learn every process that we have been through. Always actively taking golden opportunities, participating in every scientific development, and disseminating knowledge throughout the world,” explained Prof. Josaphat.

The activity guided by Ilham Alimuddin, MGIS, Ph.D., as the moderator, was attended by approximately 150 participants and ended at 13.00 WITA.
