UNIVERSITAS HASANUDDIN

Indonesian Diaspora Webinar by Graduate School of Universitas Hasanuddin Discussing Sociological Analysis on Adaptability during Pandemic

The Graduate School held a public lecture on “Pandemic Resilience and the Lower-Class Population: A Sociological Analysis”. The public lecture took place virtually using the zoom meeting at 14.00 WITA on Tuesday (19/10).

The event invited an Associate Professor, Zulfikar Amir, Ph.D., from Science, Technology, and Society Sociology Programme School of Social Science Nanyang Technological University. Sulfikar has research interests in Political Technology, Sociology of Disaster, and Social Resistance.

In his presentation, Sulfikar Amir explained how people respond to and survive in the limitedness during the Covid-19 pandemic. He emphasized the aspect of resilience, the concept of the ability to deal with situations that are susceptible to catastrophic shocks, such as natural phenomena or those resulting from human error.

In the study of social disaster, an event can be considered a disaster, if it has a disruptive impact on the social system, economy, education, and other systems. Moreover, the disaster will cause financial loss, infrastructure damage, and casualties.

“The understanding toward disaster is an essential knowledge related to the analysis of what is referred to equity in disasters. This departs from a disaster perspective, in which a disaster becomes a social phenomenon because not everyone will be able to feel the effect evenly,” said Sulfikar.

The impact on individual or group capacity to withstand shocks and self-defense depends on the fulfilment of information sources. Therefore, the capability to resist disturbance and crisis depends on the resource of information, making it less vulnerable to disaster.

Moreover, Sulfikar explained that resilience is a complex phenomenon.  Hence, the ability to survive from the impact of the disaster can be determined by several factors, material and non-material. Sociopsychological Resilience is a perceptual assessment of the effects of the pandemic crisis in four main aspects, namely:

  1. Pandemic Situation
  2. Economic Survival
  3. Social Activity
  4. Security Perception

The event was guided by Muhammad Akbar Walenna, ST, MSc., Ph.D., (Lecturer of Graduate School) and was attended by 150 participants.
