Hasanuddin University has taken a strategic step to enhance students’ English proficiency by integrating the FLOW Speak application into its English course curriculum. This initiative reflects the commitment of the Rector of Hasanuddin University to strengthen students’ foreign language skills, recognising them as a key asset in preparing for global challenges.
FLOW Speak is an innovative, technology-driven platform designed to help users improve their English speaking skills with greater confidence and effectiveness. The application features interactive speaking practice, simulated conversations, and real-time feedback from language experts.
In an interview conducted on Friday (April 25), the Head of UPT MKU Unhas, Rahmatullah Jafar, S.IP., M.Si.., explained that FLOW Speak was initially introduced at Hasanuddin University in 2023. However, at that time, it was not yet integrated into the formal lecture process. The application was merely distributed in the form of account quotas for each faculty, resulting in limited supervision and inconsistent usage. As a result, the mechanism of its use is not controlled on an ongoing basis and has not shown maximum effectiveness in supporting learning.
Rahmatullah further stated that Hasanuddin University has now integrated FLOW Speak into the teaching and learning process for English courses as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance students’ English language proficiency.
“There are approximately 1,500 students from the 2024 cohort enrolled in English courses. The selection of FLOW Speak users is conducted through the Early Diagnostic Test (EDT), with eligible participants scoring between 400 and 500. This assessment is administered by the academic team,” he explained. “Out of the 70 English classes offered this semester, 28 classes are actively utilizing FLOW Speak as part of the learning process.”
From the first to the eighth week of the semester, the concept and features of FLOW Speak were introduced to students as part of the preparatory phase. Beginning in the ninth week, the application was actively utilised to enhance students’ English communication skills. A total of 19 lecturers—selected for their prior experience with FLOW Speak accounts from 2023 and their demonstrated English proficiency—were involved in facilitating the program.
Proficiency in foreign languages, particularly English, is a crucial competency that opens global opportunities for students. The integration of FLOW Speak represents Hasanuddin University’s concrete commitment to providing students with high-quality learning tools. This initiative is not merely about adopting new technology—it signifies a broader transformation in how the university cultivates the competencies of the next generation.
