Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center of Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) established a public lecture inviting Prof. Dr. Ir. Rokhmin Dahuri, MS (Guru Besar Manajemen Pengembangan Kelautan IPB, Menteri Kelautan dan Perikanan Periode 2001-2004) as a speaker. The activity was carried out virtually on the Zoom Meeting application at 10.00 WITA on Thursday.
Dean of Graduate School, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., thanked the speaker for his participation. Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa stated that SDGs are a shared responsibility, not only the government’s duty. However, academics also have a role to play in contributing to 17 global development targets.
“SDGs Center Unhas exists as a form of commitment to jointly take a role in the achievement of 17 SDGs. Various active steps continue to be taken by Unhas through the SDGs, which are currently under the auspices of the Graduate School. We hope that activities like this will add insight, knowledge, and information about the SDGs,” explained Prof. Jamal.
After the opening, the activity continued to the presentation by Prof. Rokhmin on “The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Accelerating the Achievement of the SDGs Target”. In general, he explained sustainable development, the dynamics and achievements at the global level, the challenges of Indonesia’s sustainable development, and strategies for using science, technology, and innovation to accelerate the SDGs targets.
Prof. Rokhmin conveyed that in the industrial era 4.0, almost all aspects of life are increasingly unpredictable. The human need for quality food and environmental services will continue to increase.
From the perspective of sustainable development, economic development is quite worrying. On the other hand, the community must utilize resources and produce goods and services to fulfill needs to overcome unemployment and poverty.
During the pandemic, Indonesia’s development status decreased to a lower-middle-class country. Many development challenges and problems have occurred, such as low economic growth, high unemployment and poverty, economic inequality, trade balance deficit, and current account deficit.
Therefore, technological developments are one of the strategic efforts that can be utilized to achieve sustainable development towards a golden Indonesia 2045.
Activities guided by Dr. Ir. M. Rijal Idrus, M.Sc (Coordinator of the Maritime Division of SDGs Center Unhas) as the moderator was attended by approximately 200 participants and ended at 12.00 WITA.
