Wednesday, June 26th, 2019, is a day that will always be remembered by Professor Sangkot Marzuki. Taking place in Ir. Fachruddin Hall, Graduate School of Universitas Hasanuddin, Professor Sangkot Marzuki, who is also the former Director of Eijkman Institute, received appreciation from Universitas Hasanuddin academic community through the event “Tribute to Professor Sangkot Marzuki: Science Knows No Boundaries”
This event was held collaboratively by Graduate School, Board of Professor, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Public Health, and Faculty of Dentistry.
Rector of Universitas Hasanuddin, Prof Dwia Aries Tina Palubuhu, opened the event. In her speech, Prof Dwia explained about the long-established relation between Universitas Hasanddin and Prof. Sangkot Marzuki.
“Prof. Sangkot Marzuki had been established a close relationship with the former rectors of Unhas, started with Prof. Radi A Gani. Prof. Sangkot also had greatly contributed in Medical Forum collaborated with Faculty of Medicine to transfer knowledge with scientists of Unhas” Said Prof. Dwia.
A special remark was also given by the Dean of Graduate School of Unhas, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa and the Dean of Graduate School of Mahidol University, Prof, Patcharee Lertrit. The two deans gave a high appreciation to Prof. Sangkot Marzuki who has become their teacher for a long time.
Prof. Jamal Jompa explained that he has very deep impression on the figure of Prof. Sangkot Marzuki. "Prof. Sangkot Marzuki and I were involved together in various forums of interdisciplinary scientists named KAVLI, SCIENCE 45 and ALMI," said Prof. Jamal.
While Prof. Patcharee himself has an emotional closeness with Prof. Sangkot who has become a teacher and role model since Prof. Patcharee was a student until she served as the Dean of the Graduate School of Mahidol University. “Prof. Sangkot has been a role model for me for a long time. He has inspired me to do the best for science,” Parcharee said in a brief greeting.
In addition, a testimony to Prof. Sangkot Marzuki was also given by some of his colleagues who worked together at the Eijkman Institute and when he served as the Council of Professors at Monash University. It was Prof. Herawati Supolo-Sudoyo who had witnessed Prof. Sangkot Marzuki's journey across nations with science through the Eijkman Institute.
Prof. Herawati explained how Prof. Sangkot Marzuki finally decided to return to Indonesia to continue the Eijkman Institute as a request of BJ Habibie. Since that time, Prof. Sangkot has contributed greatly to the development of science and knowledge in Indonesia.
Three other colleagues of Prof. Sangko Marzuki also gave “Words of Reflection”. They are Prof Kevin Baird, Prof Hans Pols, dan Bruce Alberts. Each of them mentioned their words and impressions about their collaborations with Prof. Sangko Marzuki.
In his public lecture, Prof. Sangkot Marzuki shared his journey which began with his interest in “mitochondrial biogenesis” during his study at Monash University, Melbourne. Prof. Sangkot then published a number of scientific papers and researches related to “mitochondrial DNA mutations” until he became a director of Eijkman Molecular Biology Institute.
Prof. Sangkot Marzuki realizes that the country needs a strong foundation to produce scientific research.
“Indonesia is still trying, sometimes even failing to take important steps in the development of science and technology. This is because sometimes scientific research is not balanced with expertise, innovation, and qualified resources.”, Said Prof. Sangkot.
Besides the Tribute to Prof. Sangkot, the Graduate School also launched a new institution for Interdisciplinary studies, namely CEISS (Center of Excellence for Interdisciplinary and Sustainability Science) and formally collaborated with the Postgraduate School of Mahidol University, Thailand. (*)
