Faculty of Animal Husbandry of Hasanuddin University held workshop and simulation on handling the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) on Monday and Tuesday (1-2 /4/2019). The simulation, focusing on the response to emergency conditions in the event of a fire inside the campus area, was followed by the academic community of Faculty of Animal Husbandry.
On Monday (1/4/2019), workshop on K3 was held by Yahya Thamrin, SKM, M.Kes, MOHS, Ph.D and the team. Workshop and simulation took place around the Dean Office, Classrooms, and Laboratories.
The scenario of the simulation represented the atmosphere when doing lab work in the Laboratory of Microbiology and Animal Health. A student who took the permission for gong to toilet saw smoke in the Laboratory of Animal Physiology which was locked. This student shouted "fire … fire …!" many times. All students in the Laboratory of Microbiology who were doing lab work immediately stopped the activity and run outside the room.
The security team coordinator of Faculty of Animal Husbandry who heard the shouting immediately contacted the Emergency Management Team (PKD) and reported the conditions that occurred. The Chairman of the PKD Team who was in the office immediately sounded an alarm and ordered the firefighters to take the initial action to deal with the fire using a Light Fire Extinguisher (APAR) tapped to several corners.
The fire seemed heavy very fast, and efforts to suppress using APAR failed. Therefore, an evacuation process was immediately carried out. Some students panicked and began to run, some almost got accident because of the fire.
The evacuation team then assisted the victims to go to safety point and victims who needed care were immediately rushed to Unhas Hospital. The leader of PKD then contacted the Fire Fighter Team of Unhas to immediately extinguish the fire.
At the same time, the evacuation team continued to fight and ensure no victims were left behind. The extinguisher team came and started spraying water to extinguish the increasingly large fire. After an hour of struggle, the fire was successfully overpowered and extinguished. There were no fatalities, but the Physiology Lab was badly damaged.
Lecturers, staff and students were still in the gathering area and awaited further instructions. After the fire was put out, the leader of PKD announced that everything was in control and everyone could continue doing activities.
Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Prof. Dr. Ir. Lellah Rahim, M.Sc said that simulation activities are routine activities that must be carried out by the work unit. "Indeed, in the short term, this simulation aims to meet the AUN QA accreditation standards. But in the long term, this is a form of responsibility of the faculty leaders to ensure safety and security in the faculties of animal husbandry, "said Prof. Lellah.
This simulation involved not only lecturers, education staff and students, but also ambulance units from Unhas Hospital and Team of Fire Extinguisher Unhas. (*)
