Scientific events including seminars and workshops will push the emergence of contemporary studies, which will result in research that can be taught to the students.
“Now 25.000 students of Bachelors programs in Unhas are still highly dependent to the designs provided by their lecturers. To attain appropriate knowledge, it is necessary for them to develop becoming qualified students, so in the communities, they will be among the very best,” stated Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. Junaidi, M.Sc, while opening the International Seminar and Dialogue of Malayness in Eastern Indonesia IV (Selogika) in the Ipteks Building Unhas, Wednesday (5/20/2016).
The seminar entitled “Exploring History, Language, Literature, and Culture in the Malayness Cluster Nusantara” was conducted until Thursday (6/10) and exhibited numerous speakers originating from the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, United States, and Indonesia.
According to Junaidi, now people are competing with one another to be a citizen of the global city, but we cannot dismiss the cultural values we have been inherited with as it represents our real identities.
“Now, many Unhas prospectuses were not able to be facilitated, therefore forced to pursue the education in other places. They then left their hometowns and their cultural heritages to adapt to the cultures of the cities. The case now is how can culture be an integral part of the Indonesian way of living,” concerned Junaidi.
Head Committee of the Selogika Dr. Hj. Nurhayati M. Hum reported that the scientific abstracts that have been sent to the committee accumulate to 40. But one among them did not pass the content requirements set by the committee.
“Through Selogika, it is hoped that big and fresh ideas on Malayness in Nusantara Eastern Indonesia can be known from experts in the field,” stated Nurhayati.
The event conducted by the Center of Malay Studies, Center for Research and Development, Community Dynamics. Culture and Humanities of the Research Institution and Community Service exhibited a number of scientific researches from both domestic and overseas.
Nurhayati stated that the aim of Selogika itself is aimed at discussing history, language, and culture of Malay scientifically. Recommendations of the research presented will be presented to the government, and history, language, literature, culture, and societal observers.
Nurhayati.M.Hum explained that the speakers on the agenda include: Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies Unhas Prof.Drs.Burhanuddin Arafah, M.Hum., Ph.D., Prof. Dr.James T Collins (Northern Illinois University, AS), Prof. Madya Datuk Zainal Abidin Borhan (Head of Gapena Malaysia), Prof.Dr.Gofran Ali Ibrahim (Universitas Khairun, Ternate, North Maluku), Nik Abdul Rakib In Nik Hassan, M.A. (Prince of Songkla University, Thailand), Prof. Dr. Pawennari Hijjang, M.A (Head of the Graduate School Doctoral Program Anthropology), Hj.Nurhayati, M.Hum (Head of the Magister in Linguistics Graduate School Unhas), Mr.Fang Qiang, M.Hum (Vice Director of the Center of Mandarin Language Unhas), Dr.Sukardi Gau, M.Hum (Head of the Language Office Gorontalo), and Dr.Asrif, M.Hum (Head of the Language Office Ambon), along with several lecturers of Unhas, Unmul Samarinda, and other higher education institutions.
The seminar is conducted for the whole day in the Ipteks Building Unhas, Tamalanrea Campus for the first day. Second day was a city tour that visited Rotterdam Fort, Losari Beach, and Paoter Harbor.
