The Dean of FKG Unhas, Prof. Drg. Muhammad Ruslin, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.BM(K), becomes a resource person at The 53rd APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network) Dental Telemedicine Event themed “Surgeon and Orthodontist perspective in advances and trends in Orthognathic Treatment”.
The event started at 11.00 WITA conducted online through the Zoom meeting application, Wednesday (9/3).
The Asia Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) is an initiative of Kyushu, Japan, in collaboration with several universities in Indonesia in the annual dental telemedicine event.
On this occasion, APAN collaborating with Universitas Hasanuddin, University of Indonesia, Airlangga University, and Brawijaya University held a webinar presenting speakers listed below:
- Prof. Muhammad Ruslin, drg., M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp. BM(K), issuing a topic discussion: “Surgical Orthodontic: Basic Treatment and Experience in Our Institution”
- Dr. Sariesendy, drg., Sp. Ort(K) with a subject: “Treatment of adult patients with skeletal class III malocclusion”
- Andra Rizqiawan, drg., Sp.BM(K), PhD, FICS., presenting: “Surgery-First Approach (SFA) VS Orthodontic-First Approach (OFA) in Class III Skeletal Malocclusion: Narrative Review”.
In his presentation, Prof. Muhammad Ruslin, drg., M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp. BM(K)., explained the basic treatment of orthodontic surgery specializing in the treatment of unorganized teeth structures. The goal is to restore the teeth’ function and the aesthetics of the human face for the better.
“Dentofacial deformity is described as a type of deformity that mainly affects the jaw and teeth, which is caused by an uneven growth pattern between the mandible and the maxilla,” Prof. Ruslin explained.
Furthermore, Prof. Ruslin described the study of dentofacial deformity, a condition of the teeth and jaw that affects the shape of the face. The condition was analyzed by clinical examination in three different sequential analyzes, including (1) Direct and photographic clinical facial analysis, (2) Intraoral and dental cast analysis (observing intra-arch relationships and inter-arch relationships, and (3) Cephalometric analysis.
Prof. Ruslin further explained the Sagittal Split Osteotomy (SSI) procedure in handling teeth to place them in the planned position using a surgical splint.
Each condylar segment was flexibly fixed with a titanium miniplate applied intraorally on each side using four monocortical titanium screws and maintained with an elastic band for a specified period of time.
The webinar, attended by approximately 300 participants, was proceeded with the material presented by the other two resource persons and continued with a question-and-answer session which was moderated by Yossy Y. Ariestiana, drg., Sp.BM(K).
