Universitas Hasanuddin Held a Webinar Discussing the Development of Green Environmental Non-Carbon

Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), through the Faculty of Engineering (FT), conducted “Top Scientist Webinar Series 7” entitled “Zero Carbon and Green Buildings for Better Environments”. The webinar invited two speakers, Professor Deo. K Prasad (UNSW Sydney Australia) and Prof. Zhonghua Gou (Wuhan University, China). The event took place virtually using the zoom meeting on Saturday (30/10).

Dean of FT Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Arsyad Thaha, M.T., thanked the speaker for their presence to share information and experiences with the participants. He also explained a brief explanation related to the Faculty of Engineering and its accomplishment on the same occasion.

“According to SCImago, the Faculty of Engineering of Unhas was ranked 1# at the national level and 453# globally this year. The achievements show the real steps of FT Unhas, which continue to optimise performance in various ways, especially publications. The webinar is expected to increase collaboration between Unhas and other partners,” said Prof. Arsyad

The activity was officially opened by Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Partnership,  Prof. dr. Muh. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D. He said that the topic discussed can enrich the knowledge and information for our students and engineer to support Eco-Efficiency and Sustainable Development.

Furthermore, according to him, Unhas should provide full support for such activities to optimise partnership and internationalisation. Prof. Nasrum hopes that the event can trigger further collaboration in research and publication.

After the official opening, the event moved to presentations from all speakers. Professor Deo. K Prasad presented his views on “Towards Zero Carbon Environment”. Prof. Deo said the Green Building concept is defined as the concept (design, construction or operation) that reduces or eliminates negative impacts and create positive effects on the natural environment.

He also added that the Green Building concept should concern land use in accordance with the city spatial planning.  In addition, Green Building covers all the operations and maintenances. The benefits of green building will impact our environment, economy, and social aspect.

“In preserving sustainable development, “zero aspect” is the part that needs attention. Therefore, we need strategies to run a zero-carbon operation. For example, CO2 emitted by air conditioners and other electrical goods can be reduced using renewable energy,” explained Prof. Deo.

At the event, participants enthusiastically discussed the topic with questions, comments, and ideas.  The activities moderated by Prof. Ir. Baharuddin, S.T., M.Arch., Ph.D., was participated by approximately 100 participants.
