The 2026 edition of the 3rd International Dental Summer Course (IDRP) marked a significant evolution in its format and scope. Rather than being held as a standalone academic program, the summer course was uniquely integrated into a larger, more ambitious initiative: the inaugural Asian Pacific Regional Summit (APRS). Organized collaboratively by PSMKGI (Persatuan Student Mahasiswa Kedokteran Gigi Indonesia) and the Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) with support from international dental student networks, this landmark event took place from 22–26 July 2026, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The summit was scheduled to coincide with another prestigious academic event: the 9th Hasanuddin Dentistry Scientific Competition (HDSC) 2026. By framing the 3rd IDRP as part of this broader international dental academic program, the Faculty of Dentistry, UNHAS, positioned Makassar as a regional hub for dental education, research, and clinical innovation. The event brought together keynote lectures, scientific discussions, and networking opportunities that emphasized the future of dental practice across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the joint 3rd IDRP and APRS 2026 was its truly international character. The summit attracted participants from 10 different countries, reflecting growing interest in cross-border collaboration within dental education. Delegations traveled from Türkiye, Pakistan, Sudan, Jordan, Yemen, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Nigeria, Somalia, and Indonesia, creating a richly diverse environment for academic and cultural exchange. This intercontinental representation underscored the event’s vision of “dentistry without borders,” fostering partnerships that extend beyond geographical limitations. Participants engaged in discussions highlighting both shared challenges and unique opportunities in dental care across different healthcare systems and cultural contexts.

A centerpiece of the program was a specially curated panel discussion moderated by Irfan Sugianto, DDS, M.Med.Ed., Ph.D., featuring three distinguished speakers offering insights into dental education in their respective countries. Prof. Takeyasu Maeda, DDS, Ph.D., from The Nippon Dental University, Japan, shared perspectives on Japan’s advanced dental curriculum, technology integration in clinical training, and precision-focused patient care. Prof. Muhammad Ruslin, DDS, M.S., Ph.D., Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at UNHAS, discussed Indonesia’s evolving dental education landscape, community-based learning, and public health initiatives. Meanwhile, Dr. Tanit Arunratanothai from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, highlighted innovative teaching methodologies, clinical exposure, and dental tourism.

In addition to theoretical sessions, the summit placed strong emphasis on practical skill development and community outreach. A hands-on suturing workshop facilitated by Drg. Mukhtar Nur Anam, Sp.B.M.M., allowed participants to practice wound closure techniques on simulation models under expert supervision. Demonstrating a commitment to public health, participants also conducted a social service program at SD Inpres UNHAS 1 Campus, delivering interactive oral health education and toothbrushing demonstrations to elementary school students. Furthermore, delegates toured the UNHAS Dental and Oral Hospital and observed surgical procedures in the operating room, gaining firsthand exposure to clinical workflows and multidisciplinary care.
To showcase local heritage, participants experienced a cultural tour of Makassar, visiting historic landmarks such as Fort Rotterdam and the La Ga Ligo Museum. The day concluded with a sunset sailing excursion on Losari Beach aboard a traditional Phinisi boat. The entire event officially culminated on July 25, 2026, with a grand closing ceremony and awards night honoring outstanding student research and case presentations from the 9th HDSC.
This comprehensive initiative aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By enhancing clinical skills, promoting preventive community oral health care, and advancing medical training, the program directly supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being. The integration of cross-border academic panels, curriculum harmonization discussions, and student competitions advances SDG 4: Quality Education by offering inclusive, high-quality learning opportunities. Furthermore, the collaboration between international student networks, academic institutions, and health organizations embodies SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by leveraging global networks to advance healthcare education and community service.
The successful integration of the 3rd International Dental Summer Course with the inaugural Asian Pacific Regional Summit and the 9th HDSC represents a bold step forward in international dental education. By combining academic rigor, practical skill-building, community service, and clinical exposure, the Faculty of Dentistry, UNHAS, continues to set a strong precedent for holistic learning and global citizenship in dental healthcare.
