UNIVERSITAS HASANUDDIN

Forges Strategic Partnership to Boost Regional Development

In a landmark move to accelerate regional progress, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) has entered a partnership with the Nunukan Regency Government. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to leverage academic expertise for sustainable development in one of Indonesia’s key border regions.

The agreement was signed on April 9, 2025, by Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc. and Nunukan Regent Haji Irwan Sabri, SE, at the university’s rectorate building in Makassar. The event marks a pivotal step in bridging academic resources with regional governance to address pressing developmental challenges.

A Commitment to Long-Term Impact

Strengthening Cross-Border Development

Located at the Indonesia-Malaysia border, Nunukan holds significant geopolitical and economic importance. The partnership with Unhas is expected to enhance infrastructure, human capital, and innovation in the region, reinforcing Indonesia’s international standing.

Prof. Jompa emphasized the need for a dedicated task force (pokja) to ensure the collaboration translates into actionable programs. “We must design initiatives that deliver both immediate benefits and long-term value for Nunukan’s communities,” he stated.

Unhas as a Catalyst for Change

As a globally recognized institution, Unhas brings research excellence, policy insights, and technical expertise to the table. The university’s role extends beyond education—it acts as a strategic partner in shaping regional development strategies.

Regent Irwan Sabri highlighted key regional issues, including infrastructure gaps and untapped economic potential. He expressed optimism that Unhas’ involvement would drive tangible progress.

“Universities like Unhas are vital in accelerating regional growth. We hope this collaboration leads to active contributions across all development sectors,” Sabri remarked.

From Agreement to Action

The MoU outlines cooperation in:

  • Education and human resource development
  • Research and innovation
  • Community empowerment programs

Both parties agreed that the partnership must evolve beyond ceremonial gestures, focusing instead on measurable outcomes.

A Model for Future Collaborations

This Unhas-led initiative sets a precedent for how academic institutions can support regional governance. By integrating academic research with policymaking, the collaboration aims to foster inclusive and sustainable solutions.

“Unhas is committed to being an adaptive and impactful partner in Indonesia’s development journey,” Prof. Jompa affirmed.

As the partnership progresses, stakeholders will monitor its implementation, ensuring that the alliance between Unhas and Nunukan delivers transformative results for years to come.(*aih)
