Top Scientist Webinar Series Discussed Remote Sensing in the Field of Forestry

Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas) through the Faculty of Forestry held a webinar entitled “Top Scientist Webinar Series” with the theme “VHR (Very High Resolution) Remote Sensing and Fieldwork Underpinning Conservation of the Mangrove Social-Ecological System” by Prof. Farid Dahdouh- Guebas (Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium). The event took place virtually through the zoom meeting application on Monday morning (27/6).

Representing the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Muhammad Alif K. Sahide, Ph.D., in his remarks explained that the theme discussed was very important to add insight related to technological developments in the forestry sector.

“This is the right time to discuss the progress of remote sensing technology used in the analysis of forest land environmental utilization studies. This activity is expected to increase the potential or research results in the forestry sector,” explained Muhammad Alif.

The activity was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Partnership Prof. Muh. Nasrum Massi, Ph.D. In his remarks, he said that Unhas always provides an international-based learning space for students and lecturers, as a target for achieving World class University.

“The topic discussed is a very interesting topic, so it is hoped that through this program research collaboration in related fields of science can be immediately created. Productive cooperation can produce innovative ideas in providing alternative solutions in supporting better forest management,” explained Prof. Nasrum.

Prof. Farid Dahdouh-Guebas gave an overview of the history, development and use of remote sensing technology in the field of environment and forestry, one of which is to detect areas or conservation of Mangrove Socio-Ecological Systems.

Remote sensing is a technology used in measuring or acquiring data in an object from a distance, one of which is related to the object of forest management or monitoring of forest resources.

Farid Dahdouh-Guebas is a professor and head of the Systems Ecology and Resource Management (SERM) research unit. His research scope adopts a retrospective approach using relevant methods from various disciplines (tropical botany, very high resolution sequential remote sensing and ground truth, socio-ecological and ethnobiological survey research).

His research is conducted at different spatial scales from the case study level in different countries to the macroecological (global) level and also explores the science-policy interface. This research is also affiliated with Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).

The activity was attended by approximately 150 participants and guided by Arida Fauziyah, S.Si., M.Sc., (Faculty of Forestry Lecturer) as moderator.
