The Faculty of Law (FH), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), successfully hosted an international Guest Lecture entitled “Strengthening Accountability and Anti-Corruption Measures in Indonesia’s Mining Sector.” Held virtually via Zoom on Friday, 22 May 2026, the event brought together legal scholars, researchers, and students committed to promoting good governance and transparency in the management of natural resources.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Prosper S. Maguchu, LL.M., Associate Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VUA) and a member of the Business Law Research Group, delivered an insightful presentation examining the legal and institutional challenges that continue to undermine accountability within Indonesia’s mining industry. Dr. Maguchu highlighted regulatory overlaps, governance gaps, and structural weaknesses that often create opportunities for corruption and abuse of power in the sector.
He emphasized that the development of a comprehensive anti-corruption framework, transparent licensing procedures, and effective corporate accountability mechanisms is essential to ensuring that natural resource wealth contributes to public welfare rather than benefiting illicit interests.
“Effective anti-corruption measures require not only strong law enforcement at the national level but also cross-border institutional cooperation and continuous academic oversight,” Dr. Maguchu noted during the lecture.
The event also reflected the growing international research collaboration between Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and UNHAS, particularly through joint initiatives involving the Business Law Thematic Research Group (TRG). These collaborative efforts seek to develop sustainable, accountable, and progressive legal frameworks capable of addressing emerging governance challenges in the natural resources sector.
Following the presentation, participants engaged in a lively discussion on the practical enforcement of mining regulations, the role of civil society in monitoring governance practices, and the adoption of international anti-corruption standards within domestic legal systems.
Beyond the academic significance, the guest lecture directly supports Indonesia’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By encouraging critical reflection on anti-corruption initiatives and promoting transparent governance in the mining sector, the event contributes to strengthening accountable institutions, upholding the rule of law, and combating systemic corruption. Furthermore, it exemplifies the value of international academic partnerships by fostering meaningful collaboration between leading global institutions such as Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and UNHAS in advancing sustainable socio-legal reforms.
