UNIVERSITAS HASANUDDIN

Faculty of Forestry Held a Public Lecture Featuring an Expert from Australia

The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), organized a public lecture entitled “On-Line Bird Series – 2” with the topic “How Do We Plan for Species Conservation Considering Climate Change? A Case Study of Cockatoos”.

This activity invited Dr. April Reside (Lecture in Wildlife Science, School of Agriculture & Food Sciences, The University of Queensland) to be the speaker for this virtual event on Thursday (30/6).

Dr. April Reside is a biologist and researcher focusing on ecology and animals, climate change impacts and adaptation, protection, environmental management, conservation planning, and threatened species.

In her research, she develops methods for dynamic species distribution modeling that can incorporate big data and hundreds of species at good resolution. Dynamic species distribution models calculate species responses to short-term fluctuations in weather and climate conditions rather than long-term climate averages.

On this occasion, Dr. April Reside explained several important points related to conservation or protection efforts for species by implementing climate change adaptation strategies, one of which is the protection of the Gang-Gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum) and Glossy Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus lathami).

“Both species of cockatoo are listed as endangered species according to the laws of Queensland and New South Wales,” Dr. April said.

Dr. April further explained that the University of Queensland, supported by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government, has developed a management plan that provides detailed management recommendations for cockatoo conservation against climate change scenarios in determining the future of the habitat or species to have a longer period. It seeks to prioritize actions needed to ameliorate the threat.

The ACT joins many other cities, states, and territories around the world in declaring a climate emergency, recognizing the need for urgent action at all levels of government. Those efforts were expected to secure the future for all species and future generations.

After the presentation, the activity then proceeded to a discussion session. The event was attended by approximately 100 participants and guided by Dr. Risma Illa Maulany, S.Hut., M.NatRest., (Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Research, and Innovation) as moderator.
